After enjoying the first volume of this Dragon Quest spin-off manga I was happy to also get the opportunity to review the second volume, which can be found by clicking HERE.
Basically its got a bit more of an edge to it, and doesn’t involve a long training arc, thankfully…

At long last, after well over a hundred weeks, Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai has finally come to an end. It’s been a … ride, maybe not a wild one, but definitely one! While this finale is fun and exciting with a great and extremely Shonen-y final battle I have to say that its not worth watching the other 90 odd episodes full of the same plot being slowly stretched thin until it snaps several times. Still, now I’ve stuck with it for pretty much the sole reason of writing about it on this blog, let’s write about it on this blog!

At long last I can say the end is actually in sight as it has now been confirmed that Adventure of Dai will end with Episode 100, so all the setting up for the final battle this chunk of episodes do is going to pay off! Hooray! No more stalling! That being said this chunk of episodes also shows a sudden new trend of undoing previous hard work for the sake of pleasing fans, which… well, is a bit crap really. Let’s tale a look then!

I was going to open with a joke about it being nearly time to review another load of episodes (because yes, the series is somehow still going strong…) but thanks to a certain Toei Animation hacking incident the show went off the air for a month, so this review actually isn’t that far behind despite the delay of finishing it on my end. So, Adventure of Dai, eh? Yes, I really want to put “looks like its entered its final arc” but I’ve made that mistake before, so let’s just say “thinks have picked up” and leave it at that…

Oh yes, that’s right. Before we get to a few more stand-alone anime reviews and then the next bigger series / story arc we have another chunk of DQ: Adventure of Dai episodes to get through! What adventures await? … Actually, to be fair, these episodes were mostly good it’s just the series has started to outstay its welcome, which given a new opening starts the next batch I’m assuming we’re not as close to the end as I thought / hoped…

Ending my look at the Winter anime stuff, Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai continues to move forward without many people talking about it, which makes sense! It’s very … plain. There are some good fight scenes but in general it’s your basic good vs. evil JRPG-style story, which again makes sense given it was based on one of the most popular JRPGs of all time. Honestly if I hadn’t already covered what I thought was the first half (but turns out this adaptation is just barrelling forward with no end in sight) I’d probably have dropped it, but since I started let’s strap in and follow this through to the end! … Whenever that will be!

I was interested in The Adventures of Dai for two reasons: I enjoyed playing as Dai in the unfortunate game known as Jump Force, and secondly I always enjoy seeing smoothly animated Toriyama characters powering up and overcoming evil with some sort of special attack. Is the series worth watching for such a flimsy excuse? Let’s find out as I look at the first “cour”, or 13 episodes…
