Avengers: Age of Ultron Review

While it’s safe to say Age of Ultron is the least memorable of the Avengers films, that’s not saying much as the original one was an “one of a kind” event and the last two were an even bigger “end of the core story” event, leaving this as the only one that was “just” a film. Age of Ultron does have a lot going for it, a very charismatic central villain for one, but it does also have some slower, uninteresting moments that the other three Avengers films lack… Either way: let’s take a look!

Guardians of the Galaxy Review

I mentioned that during Phase 1 Thor was the risky property due to being so unlike the others in the slate, well without a doubt Guardians of the Galaxy was the riskiest film in Phase 2 due to not only being completely detached from anything already introduced but also for being based on a comic series that the vast majority of people had no idea existed. Despite all those things Guardians was a huge hit based purely on being a great, genuinely funny film rather than any connections to the MCU or beloved comics. Want to have a bit more detail? Captain America: The Winter Soldier Review

The second Captain America solo film is full of new and returning characters (though not as many as the third film!) and has an extremely significant plot twist half way through. Throw in plenty of well shot action and fight scenes and you have a genuine hit on your hands. Between this and Civil War it’s no wonder the Russo brothers were chosen to helm the final two Avengers films… Let’s take a look!

“Phase Two” of the MCU kicks off in the same way the previous one did: with an Iron Man film, though one that’s now part of a much bigger whole. Iron Man 3 is a controversial film, mostly in the way its villain, The Mandarin, is treated and can get a very marmite response of loving it or hating it. What about the rest of the film? I quite like it myself, so why do we just look at the whole thing so I can stop skirting around spoilers, eh?

Avengers Assemble Review

Otherwise known as “The Avengers” everywhere else in the world, Avengers Assemble sees the first “Marvel Team Up” film that nobody was quite sure if it would work… until it cracked a billion at the box office! While Iron Man obviously kicked the MCU off, it was this film that sold both fans and studios on the idea that a shared universe of visual media could not only be pulled off, but if done right can be pretty damn lucrative, and trust me: this was done right! Thor was the riskiest early movie in the MCU in my eyes, Iron Man was equally unknown but at least it had the “cool suit” aspect for it, Thor just had old fashioned lingo and magic, which didn’t fit with other films at all. Somehow of course they pulled it off, not only casting Thor and Loki perfectly but somehow pulling off Asgard and their magical ways and had it fit the films that came before and after it. Let’s take a look!

It’s time to have a look at the film that started it all: Iron Man. It’s funny to think back to when this film was announced and I just sort of shrugged, thinking “I enjoyed the cartoon back in the day, and the suits might look cool in live action, if they manage to pull it off.” I didn’t even watch it until it appeared on DVD… Now, in 2021, it’s the movie that kicked off an entire, unique “cinematic universe”, before that catchphrase was a thing.
