Captain America: Brave New World Review

Catching up with the MCU now, with a film I’d been putting off for a while just because I hadn’t heard it was terrible or great, just lots of middling reviews. “Brave New World” had lots of rewrites and re-shoots and by the end of the film it was obvious that it was a bit of a jumbled mess, and hey guess what? Decidedly average, as “promised”. Oh well, at least it tied up a few loose ends in the MCU canon, that’s something, right?

Captain America: Origin Review

What is now worryingly a couple of years ago I said that I’d be doing an infrequent marathon through all my Marvel comic graphic novel collections as well as throwing in the odd highly regarded (or eventually modern) story via the Marvel Unlimited app, and guess what? It’s finally time to make a start, and where better than at the VERY start, I’m talking the 1940s! Yes, Captain America’s original four issues, which contain a couple of stories each, are first up given I’m going through them in original issue release order (as much as I can anyway) and they’re the four featured in the first “Golden Age Masterworks” collection. The next bunch are all origin stories in that they’re the first stories released for a character as well (I only brought a select few relevant Vol.1 Masterwork releases, so don’t panic, you’re not in for a long slog of 60s cheesiness!) and therefore they don’t have an over-arching title, so I’ve just put “Origins” for them, because that’s comic booky, right? Right! So let’s finally make a start then!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Review

The second Captain America solo film is full of new and returning characters (though not as many as the third film!) and has an extremely significant plot twist half way through. Throw in plenty of well shot action and fight scenes and you have a genuine hit on your hands. Between this and Civil War it’s no wonder the Russo brothers were chosen to helm the final two Avengers films… Let’s take a look!

Avengers Assemble Review

Otherwise known as “The Avengers” everywhere else in the world, Avengers Assemble sees the first “Marvel Team Up” film that nobody was quite sure if it would work… until it cracked a billion at the box office! While Iron Man obviously kicked the MCU off, it was this film that sold both fans and studios on the idea that a shared universe of visual media could not only be pulled off, but if done right can be pretty damn lucrative, and trust me: this was done right! So let’s take a look at the first Avengers film, shall we?

Captain America: The First Avenger Review

I thought it was about time I finally watched the first three phases of the MCU in a … well, not a row as in daily or anything, but in order over a month or two. That means I’ll review the MCU films I haven’t reviewed yet while I go! Hooray! (and THAT means I’ll have all of the MCU films up by the end, take that Bond films! … *sigh*) I always start with Captain America before settling into release order, and now more than ever does the film feel like the true start as it mirrors the final scene in Endgame perfectly. Also, and most importantly, the film is really good in its own right! Let’s take a look…

Captain America: Civil War Review

Cap Civil War

So I’m going to watch Avengers: Infinity War tomorrow (or today, when this review goes up!) but I didn’t really have the time to watch a lot of MCU films leading up to it… in fact I just squeezed this one in, but still! Let’s have a look at Civil War, the film that could be argued as the real Avengers 3, though I feel that’s unfair given the focus is still very much on Captain America rather than the ensemble of heroes around him. It’s also the film that introduces us to both the MCU’s Spider-Man and Black Panther, the latter of whom’s solo film would turn out to be more successful than the former, which no one would have guessed a few years ago! So let’s dive in!
