As a big fan of the High Republic books and comics (as other parts of this site will tell you!) I was really excited for Acolyte, not just seeing High Republic stuff in live action but its placement in between the HR era and Episode I and focusing on what the Sith were doing at the time. It was an interesting story to tell in an interesting time period, so did they pull it off? Well, sort of. I wasn’t as blown away with it as I was hoping, but I did really enjoy myself each week, which is fair enough for a TV show, really. Let’s take a look!

Star Wars: The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight Review
The High Republic Phase III continues on, though admittedly much slower than the previous two phases (the wait for the next main book has felt like forever!) and with that comes “Shadows of Starlight”, a four issue comic series that basically fills in the gaps between the end of Phase I and “The Eye of Darkness”, the first book of Phase III (for those not in the know Phase II took place in the past…) It does manage this in a mostly satisfying way, even if reading it after reading the book meant a lot of the gaps had already been filled in by my mind’s eye anyway… Let’s take a look!

Phase III of the High Republic finally arrived with “The Eye of Darkness”, reuniting us with the cast of the original Phase of the era after a series of prequel books that, to be fair, I did enjoy a lot more than I thought I would. Still though, I was waiting to reunite with these characters and see what’s happening with the Nihil and Marchion Ro and I’m happy to report that for a book whose objective it was to set the scene for the big finale it did it very well indeed. Let’s take a look!

Tales of Light and Life is a collection of short stories set both during Phase 2 and just before Phase 3, making this sort of an epilogue and a prologue at the same time, and like all short story collections there are some good ones and some bad ones, as well as some really quite pointless middling ones. Still though, I love me some High Republic so I couldn’t pass it up, even if it was mysteriously not available on the UK Kindle store unlike the rest of the series… Anyway! Let’s take a look!

It’s time to finally put a cap on Phase II of the High Republic by looking at the comic run that unlike Phase I didn’t really have a clear breaking point (even though the trade paperback people tried, as you can see by the title!) Over 10 issues we see a mostly new group of Jedi on the planet Jedha, dealing with several issues to do with the many different Force-based groups before seeing the Battle of Jedha through their eyes. It’s a very fun story actually, not that I should really be surprised at this point… Let’s take a look!

Ignoring the overly long title I enjoyed reading this one-off volume of Star Wars High Republic Manga, which focuses on the Phase 2 battle with the Path of the Open Hand as well as featuring scenes set in the “present”, or Phases 1/3 era, thanks to the book focusing on Arkoff and Wookie’s having such a long life span. So let’s take a look!
Continue readingStar Wars: The High Republic – The Blade Review
While we eagerly wait the third phase’s kick off in a month or two thanks to the Marvel Unlimited app being a few months behind I still have some Phase 2 comic stories to get through (plus one Manga volume!), including this one! “The Blade” feels more like a spin-off from Phase 2, focusing on Porter Engle and his partner Barash Silvain with little interaction with the main plot. It’s a fun story though, so I’m not exactly complaining! Let’s take a look…
Continue readingStar Wars: The High Republic – Cataclysm Review
Phase 2 of the High Republic comes to what can only be described as an “epic” conclusion with Cataclysm, a book that against all odds has become one of my favourites in the series. I bemoaned that Phase 2 decided to go backwards into the past instead of continuing the Phase 1 storylines and characters, and while even at its end I don’t really see how it was necessary, given how much I enjoyed this book and the characters introduced across Phase 2 I’m happy it happened. Let’s take a closer look!
Continue readingStar Wars – The High Republic: The Battle of Jedha Review
The Battle of Jedha is a full length audio drama from Audible, and while normally that means still plenty of prose bookends this time it’s more akin to the Big Finish style audio dramas I’m accustomed to and I really enjoyed it! Admittedly I’m still a little miffed at this prequel side step phase but at least this was not only exciting but put focus on Jedha after it was talked up so much during Rogue One as a former holy place for Force Users. So let’s take a look!
Continue readingStar Wars: The High Republic – Convergence Review
Kicking off the shorter Phase 2 of the High Republic era (well, in terms of the things I have time to read, it actually kicked off with a YA book…) is Convergence, and boy it… really doesn’t do much. I mean, I enjoyed it, two warring planets see a Romeo and Juliet scenario happen with their heirs, all while the Jedi are caught in the middle, but it felt like a fun episode in the middle of a TV series that doesn’t connect the wider series narrative. With only one more wave of stories to come in this shorter phase I can kind of see where it might be going, but I’m currently not convinced that we needed to jump back in time a few hundred years for this much content… Well, anyway, let’s take a bit of a closer look!
