The second half of Demon Slayer is far more traditional in that its one story arc, and then some “characters get stronger through training before the next story” episodes. It also has Episode 19, which may go down as one of the best animated and most satisfying moments in recent anime memory, and the next story in question has become the highest grossing anime movie ever, so… Yeah. This feels a couple of years too late, but as Demon Slayer was put up on Netflix I felt like giving it a rewatch and finally putting a review of it up here on my blog, after it fell to the “too busy” wayside in 2019. Obviously to say this series has seen an increase in popularity since it aired would be a massive understatement, but how does the first half of what is now the first series hold up when you cut past all the hype? As I teased last week when I took a look at the X-Men anime, Wolverine’s solo anime outing quite different, in that is far less competent. This was actually made first so it’s not hard to see the changes made to Wolverine in the X-Men anime were presumably done due to how badly the character is handled in this series! Does this 12-episode show have any redeeming factors? Let’s find out!

The second half of Trigun can often be completely unrecognisable compared to the first half, with a sci-fi heavy backstory for our main protagonist and a general story arc flowing through most of the episodes. As I mentioned in my review of the first half of the series I hadn’t watched Badlands Rumble until just now for this review, having been saving it for when I rewatched the series. After having watched it fifteen-odd years ago, I decided to re-watch Trigun as it was conveniently streaming on Netflix, and while I was at it I finally watched the movie, “Badlands Rumble”, which I’ve had on my shelf for years waiting for, well, when I “finally get round to re-watching the series”. The first half of the TV series is very different in tone to the second half (well, apart from Episode 12, but it’s far too convenient to split a 26-episode series into two 13 episode halves…) in that it’s mostly stand-alone stories with a far heavier comedic edge to them. Is it still good though? Let’s take a look!

I was interested in The Adventures of Dai for two reasons: I enjoyed playing as Dai in the unfortunate game known as Jump Force, and secondly I always enjoy seeing smoothly animated Toriyama characters powering up and overcoming evil with some sort of special attack. I was planning of having bigger chunks of this One Piece arc, but episode 956 ended on such a definitive note that it seemed too perfect not to use! So the Wano arc continued on, focusing mostly on Luffy’s struggles in a labour camp, though it did at least feature some other characters and locations, so it wasn’t all bad. Jujutsu Kaisen is the latest Shonen Jump! anime to hit airwaves across Japan (and … internet waves elsewhere?) and while it does fall victim to the clichés of its genre, it does also break free from some of them as well.
