The Flash – Season 5 Episodes 10 – 22 Review

Flash S5 P2

The Flash’s fifth season’s second half (I’m sure there’s a better way of writing that…) has been and gone, and once again it had some good moments, and some bafflingly written moments… Let’s take a look!

Synopsis:

After a strange body-swapping crisis, Team Flash is back on the hunt of Cicada, meanwhile Nora begins to doubt her tutor, Eobard Thawne, once she hears of his hand in the death of her grandmother…

*spoilers appear from here on out!*

Cast of Characters:

Flash S5 P2 1

Three main cast members and a giant shark… That about sums it up!

Barry Allen / The Flash (Grant Gustin) – With her daughter from the future’s interference still causing havoc and creating new meta-humans, Barry doesn’t have much chance to rest after the chaotic events from before Christmas…

Iris West (Candice Patton) – Iris is trying to start a newspaper while also serving as a member of Team Flash, and having to deal with a daughter from the future… At least her life is never boring, I guess!

Nora West-Allen / XS (Jessica Parker Kennedy) – Nora is from the future, where her father vanished in a “Crisis” and she’s only just learned how to use her powers… with the help of Eobard Thawne…

Cisco Ramon / Vibe (Carlos Valdes) – Cisco is beginning to like the fact he can’t use his vibing powers, and is even starting to settle into a normal life pattern… well, except the meta-human hunting part, obviously…

Caitlin Snow / Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) – Caitlin is hard at work trying to track down Cicada and the other meta-humans, while her alter-ego Killer Frost is happy to help take them down after they’ve been found…

Joe West (Jesse L. Martin) – Detective Jo West is back from a long vacation with his son Wally, and is now settling back into his role at the police department… and helping Team Flash deal with meta-threats…

Ralph Dibny / Elongated Man (Hartley Sawyer) – Ralph is still finding his way as a hero, but is doing a much better job than he was last year. He’s happy to help any way he can, both with his meta-powers, and with his history as a detective-for-hire…

Sherloque Wells (Tom Cavanagh) – Sherloque is a world-class detective and problem solver from an alternate Earth. Dodgy French accent aside, he has tracked down and defeated Cicada countless times, though this time might be the trickiest yet…

Orlin Dwyer / Cicada (Chris Klein) – Dwyer became the father-figure to young Grace Gibbons, but when a meta-attack left her in a coma and himself with meta-powers, he decided to take revenge… on ALL meta-humans…

Grace Gibbons / Cicada II (Islie Hirvonen & Sarah Carter) – Currently in a coma, Grace is of no harm to anyone… but in the future, that might be a different case altogether…

Eobard Thawne / Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanagh) – Eobard Thawne, someone who by all rights shouldn’t exist any more, is locked up in the future and about to be executed, unless he can manipulate the timeline just one more time…

The Good:

Flash S5 P2 2

“I’ll erase you from the universe, Thawne!!”    “Been there, done that… Twice.”

While this half-season was plagued with problems that annoyed me, there were highlights. The core group of Cisco, Caitlin and Ralph kept the laughs coming and stopped the family drama of Barry, Iris and Nora from getting too heavy, and Sherloque, who much to my surprise actually grew on me over these 12 episodes, was a highlight. I actually enjoyed a lot of his scenes, especially when he figured out Nora’s big secret and decided to just reveal it to everyone. Speaking of Nora’s secret, that Eobard Thawne was the one giving her advice, I do enjoy Tom Cavanagh as the villainous Reverse Flash. I have no idea how he’s not only alive but has Harrison Wells’ face on again, but I still enjoyed his sneering, more reserved villainy.

Looking back at the individual episodes, nothing starts out as great. The finale had some moments, I’ll admit to not seeing Nora getting erased from the timeline coming, but overall it was a pretty… bleh chunk of episodes…

The Bad:

Flash S5 P2 3

Oh yeah, Godspeed was a thing for a single episode. Not much happened.

There were a lot of issues I had, but mainly the stupidity of Team Flash. They create a meta-human cure and instead of just sticking Cicada with it, they come to the conclusion that they have to give him the choice… WHAT?! That’s like going up to a mass murderer who uses a knife to kill people and then giving him the choice of giving up all knives before arresting him. He’s proven that if he has control of his meta-power dampening knife that he’s going to kill people, innocent people. Stick him with the cure and then put him in a regular prison…It’s not like if he declined the cure you wouldn’t arrest him, it would just mean that if he ever escaped he wouldn’t be able to kill innocent civilians or those you hold dear anymore…

Speaking on the cure, Cisco decides to take it in the finale, wanting normal life… The heck? Just quit the team and don’t use your powers, does he have any idea how much he’s helped the team in a dire pinch? Now he can’t help in any future crisis. I also didn’t like how everyone treated Barry like crap for not trusting his daughter when he found out she was working with the evil and manipulative man who killed his mother in front of his very eyes. I think he was in the right to be worried about that scenario!

Cicada was still too super-cheesy for me to take seriously, his voice, especially out-of-mask, was often cringey. His grown up daughter from the future was at least less cheesy, even if her identity was obvious (so obvious they revealed it themselves in the same episode she was introduced, to be fair). It still seemed unnecessary, and once again Nora risks her life by communicating with the still-in-a-coma Grace to ask if she wants the cure rather than just curing her of her powers, powers that will one day go on to cost innocent people their lives. That drove me up the wall…

Then there Eobard Thawne. Like I said, I like the performance, but how is he still a thing?! We saw him get erased at the end of Season 1, then we saw a time remnant version of him get erased in Legends of Tomorrow, so how is he still around, and now back to wearing Wells’ face again? It’s just never explained. There is a brief mention from Thawne that the red “negative speed force” energy being the only thing that can avoid the effects of timeline changes, but it still doesn’t add up. His manipulating of Nora was so Cicada’s power-dampening dagger, which is being used to remove his powers, could be erased from the timeline and free him, which was a fun twist, it’s a shame it led to a very brief run around followed by a swift and easy defeat for the Reverse Flash…

A few side-stories, like Caitlin’s evil Dad and then possibly turned-evil mother, and all of them having ice-powers (presumably in the case of the mother) was fine, but not that exciting. There were a few episodes that were quite bad, especially Episode 13 “Goldfaced”, where saw a powerless Ralph and Barry act like cool action movie heroes with non-lethal guns.

Overall Thoughts:

Flash S5 P2 4

A confusing screen shot, out of context… Enjoy!

The latter half (well, latter two-thirds, I guess) of Season 5 had some funny moments and a few bits of good action, but it was riddled with scripting problems, making people make the “right choice” even in the face of it being completely illogical, and a set of villains either crap, uninteresting, or confusing-as-to-how-they-exist. I can’t believe I’m starting to miss entire seasons based around a single speedster villain…
