My Top 10 TV Series/Seasons of 2019

Top 10 TV 2019

Another year gone, and time for another trio of Top 10s! It’s only December 30th as I upload these, but the reason for that will become clear tomorrow! So without further ado, here are my top 10 TV series (or seasons, if you like) of 2019, as always baring in mind there are plenty I missed out on (like the Mandalorian… Thanks for not launching Disney+ here yet, Disney! *grumble grumble*) so these lists are, fittingly given its my blog, just what I’ve actually seen…

I found Stranger Things’ third season stronger overall than Season 2, though it was a slow-starter. Still, by the end, it had action, fun characters and lots of well written and directed scenes, as per usual with the franchise, plus a nice message about growing up, made all the more obvious as the main cast themselves grow past childhood in front of our eyes…

The original Mob Psycho 100 took a lot of people, myself included, by surprise, and I’m happy to report that unlike its ONE-written brother One Punch Man, the second season of Mob Psycho 100 was great, with some truly stunning animation. While it didn’t quite reach the heights of season 1, it was still worth a watch every week. (My review of Mob Psycho 100 II can be found HERE)

The first of many “Final Seasons” this year, I was hoping that the Game of Thrones finale would be my number one, but instead it just cracks the top 10 list in general. While I wasn’t anywhere near as harsh on the season as some, I still have to register disappointment over how rushed the ending felt, not to mention a certain choice of new King… Ah well… (My overall review of Game of Thrones Season 8 can be found HERE)

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part V: Golden Wind actually started in late 2018, but I always count the year a show ends if it straddles two years. Golden Wind was… I’m not going to say bizarre, but it was an odd one. I liked the mafia setting and some moments and mini-arcs were really entertaining, but the overall plot was a bit of a non-event. Still, as evidenced by its place at #7, I still enjoyed it a lot! Bring on Part VI!

Top 10 TV 2019 6

Legion, a show that got itself the first ever #1 slot two years ago on this blog, has been dropping, finding itself at #4 last year, and now 6 for its finale. That’s a shame, but it’s still a damn good series, even if it lacks the wow factor the first two had, and managed to give us an overall finale, unlike other Marvel series that were cut-short… (my review of Legion Season 3 can be found HERE)

Top 10 TV 2019 5

Luther is one of those series that is outside of my usual genre, but it’s so damn good at what it does that it doesn’t matter. Idris Elba’s performance is what pulled me in several years ago, and I’m happy to say that this final series delivered. The tense final episode and how it ties up certain loose ends was perfect, but also leaves it just open enough that if they ever change their mind in a few years, they’ll be able to do another one, just with a completely fresh plot…

Top 10 TV 2019 4

Another final season, though at only two seasons it seems silly to label it as such, The Punisher’s second season built on the origin created and perfected in the previous one, and then gave us a new story that ends with how Frank Castle went from revenge to hunting down people to “Punish”. It was a perfect adaptation of the character, and if this really gets decanonised and a new Punisher appears in the MCU, it’s just not going to have the same effect… (My review of Punisher Season 2 can be found HERE)

Top 10 TV 2019 3

Following on from last year, clearly pointing out how stupid it was to call this “Season 3 Part 2” when it was nearly a year apart, Attack on Titan’s 2019 chunk of story was a cracker, with lots of action and drama, particularly the fate of one Erwin Smith, which frankly flawed me it was so well done. I know a lot of people didn’t like the big revelation when we finally got to Eren’s basement after all this time, but I didn’t mind it. This is scoring so highly mainly due to the Erwin episodes, though…

The Expanse was saved from its cancellation by Amazon Prime, and so we got a new series out of it, adapting Book 4. Despite its shift in format (all-at-once release rather than weekly) and budget (more or less? No idea) The Expanse Season 4 really felt like a genuine continuation, and delivered another fine slice of great space drama. Seriously, few things put more of a genuine smile on my face than that intro, knowing I’m going to be treated to another hour of well thought out sci-fi with a really interesting slow-burn story arc…

Top 10 TV 2019 1

I can assure you I’m not sponsored by Amazon Prime (trust me, looking at my bank account I’m pretty sure I’m not sponsored by anyone…) but here we are with our second Prime exclusive in the row, and in the top spot no less. Good Omens was a genuine treat, each episode so well shot, so genuinely funny, and with a lead duo that just oozed charisma, especially when on screen together. A series I’d recommend to any and everyone. (You can read my review of Good Omens HERE)
