The Flash – Season 5 Episodes 1 – 8 Review

Flash S5 P1

It must be getting close to Christmas, as it’s time to start looking at the first third of the new Arrowverse seasons! First up, oddly as it’s the last to air, is The Flash Season 5, which has so far been good. Nothing ground breaking just yet, the idea of Barry and Iris’ daughter from the future arriving is at least a new one, and the current lead villain is a bit different, if not on the extremely cheesy side… Let’s take a look!

Team Flash meet Nora, Barry and Iris’ daughter from the future. While Iris expresses excitement, Barry is concerned that she could alter the timeline based on his own mistakes with time travel…

*spoilers appear from here on out!*

Cast of Characters:

Flash S5 P1 4

“Hmmm… Changing the past is one thing I’d hope not to pass down to my children…”

Barry Allen / The Flash (Grant Gustin) – Barry is a mix of emotions. He eventually has a daughter with Iris: Good. Said daughter has time travelled to see him: Bad. Does he have the heart to send her back though?

Iris West (Candice Patton) – Iris is thrilled to meet her daughter from the future, potential timeline problems be damned! It’s just a shame she seems so distant to her…

Nora West-Allen / XS (Jessica Parker Kennedy) – Nora comes from a future where The Flash, her father, has long since vanished. Still, she can time travel with her super speed now! So why not pop back and have a look…

Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) – Cisco is getting over losing the love of his life, but at least he has some new problems to solve!

Caitlin Snow / Killer Frost (Danielle Panabaker) – Caitlin is still mourning the loss of her alter ego, Killer Frost, and wishes to delve deep into her creation, which seems to be linked to her past, rather than the particle accelerator explosion…

Joe West (Jesse L. Martin) – Joe is a father again, and that means lots of sitting down in the living room, seemingly… (Yes I know Jesse got a back injury in real life, it was a joke, not a complaint!)

Ralph Dibny / Elongated Man (Hartley Sawyer) – Dibny is now a full time member of Team Flash, though his skills as a detective might be under threat with the arrival of…

Sherloque Wells (Tom Cavanagh) – Sherloque has solved the mystery of Cicada in multiple universes, and makes a nice sum of money doing so. This universe however, things might be different…

Orlin Dwyer / Cicada (Chris Klein) – Orlin had nothing, then he had everything… before it was all taken from him again. It’s all the fault of the metahumans, and he now has one goal: to wipe them out entirely…

and many more!

The Good:

Flash S5 P1 1

“Hello everyone, I’m your plot device this season. Nice to meet you.”

While time travel shenanigans ruined a lot of Season 3, I will say that hasn’t been the case here (mostly because the lead cast haven’t lost their sense of humour this time…) Nora arriving from the future has been a good plot thread, starting with Barry being reluctant because he knows all about mucking up the timeline by going back to the past, but then he just… goes with it because he finds out that in Nora’s time he’s been effectively dead for most of her life and she wants to get to know him. Nora is cold towards Iris for a few episodes, eventually revealing that she only found out she had powers recently because the Iris of the future suppressed her powers without her knowledge. The two make up soon, though, which eventually leads to the highlight episode of this batch of The Flash: Episode 8 “What’s Past in Prologue”.

In the episode, which is overall episode 100 by the way, Barry and Nora go through a trip of the series so far, grabbing a bit of Savitar’s suit from Season 3, the speed force stopping transmitter from Hunter Zolomon / Zoom from Season 2, and then finally meeting up with good old Reverse Flash in Harrison Wells’ body from the original season in order to get him to fix the transmitter when it breaks. Nora acts oddly nicely towards Mr. Thawne, before they arrive at the night of the particle accelerator explosion in order to charge up their fix up solution for this season’s big bad: Cicada. It was a nice trip down memory lane. Nora is eventually shocked to find out that Reverse Flash killed Barry’s mum in front of his childhood eyes, leading to a cliffhanger where Nora returns to her own time and confronts the Eobard Thawne in Wells’ body version of the Reverse Flash in a cell, rather confusingly…

There was also some good moments with Cisco, who soon has his powers sort-of taken away from him, and Caitlin, who regains her other self by finding out her father has a similar affliction, though the “evil side” is actually evil, and has taken over the body entirely. Elongated Man / Ralph has been solid comic relief character also…

Some of the villains of the week were quite fun too. Rag Doll was extremely creepy, and having the Weather Witch appear to try and kill Weather Wizard was a fun call back, and a fun episode in general.

The Bad:

Flash S5 P1 2

He looks like someone’s idea of a cool anti-hero… when they’re 12.

Cicada is a little bit too cheesy for me, even though he’s a villain in The Flash, which has had its fair share of super-cheese (though normally for one episode at a time). The gas mask and hood, the “creepy” breathing sound and most of all the voice. Even out of the suit, our troubled soul declaring he’s going to kill all metas in a deep-throated voice was… cringey. I like his backstory, a nobody who ended up with custody of his niece and didn’t want the responsibility eventually comes to love her like his own daughter, then she gets put in a coma by the satellite from the end of the last season, the same incident gives him his power to take away metahumans’ powers. It’s a good backstory, it’s just a shame the end result is a bit… shit.

Speaking of shit, Sherloque Wells would be a funny one-off character in an episode, but who thought it would be a good idea to have Tom Cavanagh do a really over-the-top and forced French accent for the season? Man it grates on your ears, it sounds like the kind of French accent you made up in school playgrounds to make your friends laugh…

Overall Thoughts:

Flash S5 P1 3

This was also the bad, but I couldn’t do both in one picture…

The Flash Season 5 is off to a good start. These first eight episodes were really just character building for Nora / XS, and then dropping that big cliffhanger for when the series picks up in 2019. It’s fine, and told some good stories, even if the big bad has so far been a disappointment…
