Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Review

It’s time to immediately finish off this return to the Game to Movie Marathon as I finally got a chance to sit down and watch the third live action Sonic film, a series that still baffles me how it’s not only a thing but a good thing and a successful thing. My main gripe over STH2 was a few long scenes of the human characters and some really poor humour and thankfully for this third film they seem to have fixed both of those issues as the human characters take a backseat for the most part and the humour is the fun kind of kids film humour that I can still enjoy as an adult, rather than … whatever that stuff was in the long wedding scene last time… Let’s take a look!

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (Mega Drive) Review

I had a lot to think about when it came to this quick one-off return to the Game to Movie Marathon, as technically if I was doing the Sonic games in order with the films I’d be reviewing Sonic CD here (or really I’d have reviewed CD with the second movie and 2 now, but that would really be confusing!) also given Sonic 3 the movie focuses so much on Shadow would a review of Sonic Adventure 2 make more sense here? I ended up matching 3 with 3 for the sake of nicely matching visuals, but then I had to surrender to my childhood nostalgia and keep 3 separate from “& Knuckles”, which it’s often paired with it (for good reason, don’t get me wrong…) Basically a review of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 to coincide with Sonic the Hedgehog 3, so let’s take a look at another one of my childhood favourites, shall we?

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Review

Let’s once again end a run of “Game to Live Action Movies” with a Sonic movie funnily enough as we take a look at Sonic The Hedgehog 2, a sequel to one of those extremely rare things known as a good game adaptation (and a great game in its own right!). Thankfully Sonic 2 manages to keep the momentum going and deliver another fun film with more Jim Carrey insanity, the debut of Tails and Knuckles and even more original MegaDrive Sonic references for me to smirk at. Let’s take a look!

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Mega Drive) Review

Like many Mega Drive owners Sonic 2 holds a special place in my heart, even though I technically played the completely different Master System game of the same name first much like Sonic 1 I’m not going to deny this version is better. So even if I wasn’t reviewing the Sonic The Hedgehog 2 film this game would’ve appeared on this site sooner or later. Frankly Sonic 2 on the Mega Drive is one of my go-to childhood games that I put on for an hour or two here and there because I know I’ll always have a great time both due to nostalgia and the fact it’s still a great game, right up there with Streets of Rage II on both accounts. So let’s take a look!

Sonic The Hedgehog (2020) Review

With this, the 31st film in this marathon, we draw it to a close, and it’s somehow fitting that I started with a (crap) Mario film and end with a good (!!) Sonic The Hedgehog film, the two rival iconic franchises of my childhood. In the three decades between the films we have only now started to find a groove of good productions (ignoring the straight-to-disc Doom film) that actually pay homage to the source material while doing their own thing. Admittedly that’s only two films in a row, and at least one film on the horizon isn’t looking good (hello Monster Hunter!) but still! Let’s take a look at Sonic The Hedgehog, the film that despite looking like a train wreck a year ago has managed to pull one out of the bag!

Sonic The Hedgehog (Mega Drive) Review

As I’ve said before, while I played a lot of NES and SNES growing up thanks to my brother owning the consoles, I had a Master System and a Mega Drive (because… brotherly rivalry, I guess?) That means while I’m happy to admit Super Mario World is the better game in retrospect, I played a hell of a lot more Sonic The Hedgehog growing up, and damn great games they were too! (Pretty good film as well, for the record!) So let’s end this Game to Live Action Movie Marathon’s game section with one of the defining games of my childhood, the original Sonic The Hedgehog on the Mega Drive (after having already reviewed the Master System version, the first one I played, a few years ago…)

Sonic The Hedgehog (MS) Review

Sonic the Hedgehog MS

“Why would you choose that game?!” I hear you shout? Two reasons! It was the first Sonic game I ever played, and if I don’t review a Master System game soon that area of the blog will remain “Coming soon!” forever. So let’s take a look at 8-bit Sonic the Hedgehog, a fun, though much slower, experience!
