The Way of All Flesh is the first story after “Ophidius / Beautiful Freak” which I reviewed a year or so back, so it’s nice to finally be “caught up” so to speak and remind myself of what happens to Izzy now she inhabits an alien body that isn’t hers. This story also does that now-classic-but-then-rare thing of The Doctor meeting a historical figure in their own time, in this case two figures in Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, who I’ll admit I have no idea about beyond what’s said in these four issues, but that’s me and my lack of interest in art for you! So let’s get this next batch of Eighth Doctor comics going then, shall we?

It’s time to end both the Glorious Dead graphic novel and the era of black and white Who comics as we take a look at three light-hearted adventures that originally came out in between and after the titular Glorious Dead, but were all collected at the back of the GN for pacing purposes. Autonomy Bug is three issues long and was the final B+W strip, while the other two are more one-off celebratory efforts… but are any of the three worth a read? Let’s find out!

So two stories ago we saw the (re)introduction of Kroton The Cyberman, then the previous story we resumed following The Doctor and Izzy, so now it’s only natural that our next story sees the two come together! The Company of Thieves is more of a light-hearted affair, which given the story that’s about to come next, only makes sense! Is it good though, or does it exist purely to set up something greater? We re-join The Doctor and Izzy on their travels as they arrive in 17^th Century Japan, so expect samurai swords, constant referring to one’s sense of honour and … a non-copyright version of Godzilla and Astro Boy? We quickly make a detour from the travels of The Doctor and Izzy as the next story in this run is “Unnatural Born Killers”, but in order to understand THAT story we have to look at two far older backup strips called “Throwback: The Soul of a Cyberman” and “Ship of Fools” (thankfully included in this graphic novel!) as all three stories tell the tale of Kroton the Cyberman, a member of the Cyber Race who regains his humanity and searches for friends and meaning, his original memories lost. We return to the Eighth Doctor DWM comic strips for a run that will cap-off the black and white comic era, and do so with a bang! First we get a story that is most infamous for bringing Dr. Grace Holloway back from the TV Movie, something most entities, including the likes of Big Finish, haven’t been able to do (due to the character’s mixed ownership). It’s time to cover the fourth, final and titular story in the “Mistress of Chaos” collected release… “Mistress of Chaos”! The story covers quite a bit of ground and is highly connected to the first two stories of this graphic novel, making it feel close to the old Eighth Doctor “story arc in a graphic novel” format, though admittedly not anywhere near the heights of those… which few are, to be fair! So how does Mistress of Chaos stand on its own? Let’s find out!

The third of the four stories from “Mistress of Chaos” funnily enough features the Mobox, who made two major appearances in the past, both during the Eighth Doctor DWM run, the same run I’m currently covering on-and-off here at the moment! After Josiah Dogbolter’s daughter appearing in the first story it’s odd to see two examples of DWM bringing back their continuity so close together, given they normally just save it for big occasions. Is it any good, though? That’s the more relevant question!
