Red Dwarf X (because they counted the “Back to Earth” special as Series IX) is a true return to form for the series, with the cast reduced back to the classic four from Series III – VI, with six half hour episodes most of which are good to even great. The next few series sort of drop to middling (if memory serves) but X at the very least was, and as it turns out still is, a real treat to watch. Let’s take a deeper look!

What If…? Season 2 Review
I really enjoyed the first season of What If…? but I saw so few people talking about it that I didn’t think a second season was too likely, but here we are! (and with a third confirmed as well for that matter) Season 2 had plenty of fun stories with the same level of surprising actors actually coming back to continue their roles, plus a very loose adaptation of the 1602 comics and an episode introducing an entirely new character to the MCU canon (even if it is in another universe…) Let’s take a look.
Continue readingX-Men: The Animated Series – Season 3 Episodes 1 – 11 Review
Managed to get a lot more X-Men watched over the “festive period” so let’s get started with the first half of Season 3, which sees the most enjoyable adaptation of the Phoenix Saga in any medium (with the Dark Phoenix stuff following in the second half of the season for the record!) plus some fun stand-alone stories as well, including the return of Apocalypse (hooray!) and Mojo (ugh…) The season has a general greater focus on sci-fi than the Earth-based issues they’ve tackled in the previous two seasons (Magneto doesn’t appear at all this season!) which certainly gives it a different feel, so let’s take a look!
Continue readingLoki – Season 2 Review
A month and a bit late on this review, but hey-ho, I’ve been later with bigger shows! Loki Season 2 is a hard one to get my head around because as it was airing there wasn’t a week where I felt excited to watch the next episode, and in fact several weeks I watched the episode a few days after it “aired” whereas the other MCU / Star Wars Disney + shows I watched the night of the day they’re uploaded, with the only other exception being the recent MCU show Secret Invasion, so… that’s not a good sign for MCU TV projects… Anyway, on the other hand it had some really fun performances and a great end sequence, so it’s not really that bad, I just never felt invested in it… Let’s see if I can actually pull these random thoughts into a coherent review, shall we?
Continue readingCastlevania: Nocturne – Season 1 Review
The eagerly anticipated follow up to Netflix’s unexpectedly good Castlevania cartoon (or “adult animation” for those who are for some reason embarrassed by that term, though written by Americans and animated in Texas means it’s not an anime!) Castlevania: Nocturne sees lightly adapted bits of game lore sprinkled in amongst an original story set in revolutionary France. Now lacking the sometimes comically bad dialogue found in the original series but still occasionally trying to emulate the “banter” Nocturne does a lot of things right, especially the animation quality, but it’s not perfect. Let’s take a look!
Continue readingAhsoka – Season 1 Review
We finally get our sequel series to Star Wars Rebels and it’s weirdly in live action! Never would’ve seen that coming when Season 4 ended, that’s for sure. While I’m not sure how this series came across to those who weren’t familiar with the animated show I loved it, especially the back half where the story moved from “catching people up on our main characters” to “moving the plot forward”. The returning animated characters were really well cast as well, so it made for a smooth transition, which was handy (and again, really weird) So with all that being said, let’s take a look!
Continue readingOne Piece – Live Action Season 1 Review
After failing with Death Note and creating the utter disaster that was the Cowboy Bebop live action series when I heard that Netflix was tackling One Piece I laughed at the idea given the One Piece world is weirder and wilder than either projects they previously got so wrong. So imagine my surprise when I started hearing that it was actually good, so positive was the reception that against all my instincts I gave it a go, and you know what? It is good! Not amazing, it has flaws not just related to having to condense so much story into so few episodes, but the fact I enjoyed a live action version of One Piece at all is some sort of minor miracle. So let’s take a deeper look at the show, a good few weeks after its relevant because I’m me and I do that sort of thing…
Continue readingX-Men: The Animated Series – Season 2 Review
The second season of the animated X-Men series has an over-arching plot across all 12 episodes though really it’s mainly short cut-away sequences that don’t go anywhere until we get to the two-part finale. It was an interesting choice but I don’t feel it worked well. Luckily though a lot of the actual episodes are really fun and feature some pretty deep cuts from Marvel lore mixed with interesting looks at our titular heroes… so let’s take a look!
Continue readingX-Men: The Animated Series – Season 1 Review
Like many people I loved the X-Men cartoon growing up in the early 90s and so like many people I’m very excited for the upcoming “X-Men 97” series, which is weirdly a fancy name for a sixth season of the original show. So I thought I’d see if I can review the five seasons leading up to the release of 97 though given we have no concrete date other than late 2023 I can’t say if I’ll make it or not, but either way I’ve enjoyed this enough that I’ll want to carry on regardless! I still remember the opening two-parter vividly, seven-or-eight-year-old me was blown away by the more serious tone the show went for (same reason I loved the Batman animated series) so let’s see if that holds up several decades later…
Continue readingGood Omens – Season 2 Review
The first season of Good Omens was my 2019 TV Series/Season of the year so it’s no surprise to hear I was eagerly anticipating this return and thankfully it didn’t disappoint! While I’d say it was slightly weaker than the first season, though given how highly I rated that it means Season 2 was still extremely enjoyable. This is mostly thanks to the endlessly charismatic duo of Michael Sheen and David Tennant, not to do a disservice to the other actors or the writing itself! So let’s take another dive into the world of Good Omens, shall we?
