We reach the titular story of the Phantom Piper graphic novel, and the story doesn’t disappoint, well unless you’re not familiar with some past DWM stories, then it might… but I was fine! So let’s take a look at what the hell I’m going on about, shall we?
The Twelfth Doctor DWM comics continues with the old three-part strip followed by a single part adventure (with far worse artwork) that has become a common occurrence for these comics. Parliament of Fear was quite good, where as Matildus, even given its short length, was not as good… Want more detail?! Read on!
I start my read through of the collected Graphic Novel “The Phantom Piper” with, well, the first story in the collection! The Soul Garden is a fine story, full of nice dream-like imagery and good artwork, so it’s a nice way to kick off the final run of Twelfth Doctor DWM comic stories (though his actual final story is in a final GN out next year…) Let’s take a closer look!
Well, here we go, the first time I review a Twelfth Doctor story in retrospect, rather than after it airs. Deep Breath not only introduces us to a great new Doctor (well, great for the rest of this series, anyway…) but also gives us a fun villain and a waves a goodbye to Vastra, Jenny and Strax by giving them one final adventure. It’s a damn fine story, with only a few minor quibbles, so let’s take a good look!
It’s a “of the Cybermen” double on this site, completely coincidentally. I finally end my run on the Titan Comics Year 2 graphics novels with this, the big crossover event… sort of. It features all four of the Doctors that had on-going comics in this year (as well as cameos from other Doctors!), but they’re all separate and never interact with each other. Oh, and the artwork is awful. Let’s take a deeper look, then!
The 12th Doctor “Year Two” run of Titan Comics comes to a mixed end with a volumes of two more stories. “Terror of the Cabinet Noir” is actually a great story, with some of the best artwork I’ve seen in one of these comic stories, where as “Invasion of the Mindmorphs” is pretty weak, and pretty much a rip off of a classic Futurama story… So, let’s take a closer look at this collected graphic novel of two halves!
The next volume of Titan Comics’ 12th Doctor run once again contains two stories (this time a three-part story and a two-part one) but is now set in between Series 9 and 10, meaning The Doctor is companionless. Much like the show itself, being Clara-less helps wonders here, as the titular story is actually really great, and the second story (“Playing House”) isn’t too bad either. So let’s take a look!
After spending some time back with the Doctor Who Magazine comics, it’s time to rejoin the Titan line and take a look at the first two 12th Doctor collected graphic novels of the second “year”, starting with The School of Death. Technically a four-part story and a single part one, both of which are the last stories to feature Clara in the Titan line and both of which feature a returning enemy! So are they any good? Well…
It’s time to cover the titular story from the latest Doctor Who Magazine collection, and what a story it is! The Twelfth Doctor going up against the original Master in 70s London! A story you can only do via a medium like comics, given the sad passing of Roger Delgado all those years ago. As if that wasn’t enough, it contains an even more significant event at the end (depending of which expanded media you like to consider “canon”). So… let’s take a look!
Continuing my look through the Doctor Who Magazine “Doorway to Hell” graphic novel we get the next two stories, Bloodsport and Be Forgot, before we get to the “main event”, so to speak. Bloodsport is a perfectly fine little tale with a rather bluntly delivered message, and Be Forgot is a rather harrowingly realistic portrayal of a man suffering from mental health issues… which is nice to see portrayed now and again, and so well too. Let’s take a look at them!
