Power Play is an odd story, and would’ve been odd had it been made during the Sixth Doctor’s “Lost” Season 22 as it heavily features a returning companion from the Second Doctor era in Victoria Waterfield, something never really done on TV (not unless the companion is with their version of the Doctor for a multi-Doctor story, anyway). Sadly instead of the mid-80s this audio drama version was recorded in the early 2010s, meaning Deborah Watling wasn’t quite up to the task of anything other than the role of “slightly eccentric old woman”… Still, does it work? Is it a good listen? Let’s find out!

Although it was only a few days ago when I reviewed The Macros, this Sixth Doctor Lost Story was released several years after that, so it does feel weird going straight to it for this marathon! Anyway, Guardians of Prophecy is a sequel to The Keeper of Traken by its original writer Johnny Byrne, set on the last remaining planet of the Traken Union and features Melkurs, so if you liked that story you’ll love this, but what if you didn’t like Keepers of Traken? Well… let’s find out!

The original run of Sixth Doctor Lost Stories comes to a close, and while we now have four more Lost Stories from this era after it, it’s still a shame to see this original series go out on such a crushingly dull end. The Macros isn’t a bad story, but it’s not a very exciting one either, managing to fall into that deadly area known as “forgettable”. Want to read more? Song of Megaptera is one of the more interesting Lost Stories in terms of its history. It started off as a Fourth Doctor TV script, then was reworked into a Fifth Doctor script that would’ve seen Turlough debut as a person living inside the giant whale (more on that in a bit…) and then finally reworked as a Sixth Doctor story for Season 22, before being dropped. So this story’s creation was a long time coming, was it worth the wait? In short… No, not really…

The second of the new double bill of Fourth Doctor Lost Stories jumps ahead a few seasons and sees us land slap-bang in the middle of the Douglas Adams-y era of The Doctor and Romana II. It was written by John Lloyd of Blackadder, QI and a whole bunch of other things-fame and script edited by Douglas Adams, so as you’d imagine it leans heavily into the humour side, which is fine, great even, if the story was actually fully formed… Let’s take a look…

Return of the Cybermen is an interesting Lost Story as it’s the original script for what became “Revenge of the Cybermen” and written by Cybermen co-creator Gerry Davis, but the script was rewritten by Robert Holmes after he wasn’t satisfied with this one. I remember when this came out it split opinion, some saying it was great, others saying it was too long winded and boring. I fell more towards the latter back then, so going into this second listen ten odd years later I was hoping to have my old opinion reversed and that maybe I just wasn’t in a mood for a slow burning historical-set adventure when I first listened to it.
