Doctor Who: Gaze of the Medusa Review

DW Gaze of the Medusa

In what will probably end up being the last Doctor Who comic review of the year (but far from the last Doctor Who review of the year!) I take a look at the Fourth Doctor mini-series, titled “Gaze of the Medusa”. Sadly for me I read this after the great Third Doctor mini-series from Titan Comics, making this quite a step down. It’s fine, but it feels like it’s written by someone who only has limited knowledge of Tom Baker’s Doctor, where as “The Heralds of Destruction” felt like a love letter to the Third Doctor. Anyway, let’s take a bit more of a detailed look, shall we?

Doctor Who: The Heralds of Destruction Review

DW The Heralds of D

Titan Comics does the Third Doctor with Heralds of Destruction, and boy do they ever do it justice! Rare for Titan Comics, this story has consistently great artwork and a story that while it has some strong continuity nods, still tells a really good tale. So let’s take a look at what will, sadly, be a very rare Third Doctor comic story!

Doctor Who: The One Review

DW The One

Continuing on catching up with the Doctor Who Year 2 Titan comics, the next volume of Eleventh Doctor somehow manages to be even more full of continuity references and characters than the previous comic collection… The Master, River Song, the Time War… Shada even plays a major role! Let’s see if they can pull all this together and still tell a good story, shall we?

Doctor Who: The Then and The Now Review

DW TTaTN

Continuing with my catch up with Year 2 of Titan’s Doctor Who comic paperbacks, I jump onto the Eleventh Doctor’s run with “The Then and The Now”, which starts a rather continuity-heavy look back at The Doctor’s time in the Time War, including the first (I think?) appearance of the War Doctor in comic form! … and Abslom Daak?! Let’s take a look!

Doctor Who: Arena of Fear Review

DW AoF

I know I said “occasional dip into Titan comics Trade Paper Backs”, but I didn’t mean for it to be quite THIS occasional! I guess that’s what happens when so many family members visit during August. ANYWHO, the 10th Doctor “Year 2” comics continue with Arena of Fear, featuring three stories (Arena of Fear, The Wishing Well Witch and The Infinite Corridor) across five issues. Let’s take a closer look!

Doctor Who: Cuckoo and Uninvited Guest Review

DW Cuckoo and UG

My journey through the Emperor of the Daleks collected DWM comics comes to an end with these two low-key stories. It also marks the end of the Seventh Doctor comic strips in the magazine, as after this they just switched between Doctors as the idea of new Who on TV began to vanish. So let’s see how this era of British Who comics came to an end!

Doctor Who: Final Genesis and Time and Time Again Review

DW Final Genesis TATA

My journey through the Emperor of the Daleks collected Doctor Who Magazine graphic novel thingie continues with the four-part alternate Earth story “Final Genesis”, and the 30th Anniversary 10-page colour special “Time and Time Again”, plus both feature the “bad ass” New Adventures version of Ace, so… hooray? Let’s find out!

Doctor Who: Emperor of the Daleks Review

EOTD

Emperor of the Daleks is another continuity-fest from the early 90s pages of Doctor Who Magazine. Davros! Daleks! Abslom Daak! Two Doctors! Plus a whole chapter is colour! Let’s have a look at the six part story, plus the sort-of prequel “Up Above The Gods”, a single chapter story that fits in between chapters 1 and 2 of the story.

Doctor Who: Pureblood and Flashback Review

DW Pureblood and FB

Having finally picked up my copy of “Emperor of the Daleks”, the latest collection of Doctor Who Magazine comics, it’s time to start the third part of the trinity of Doctor Who media I enjoy. All these stories were released in 92 / 93, where Doctor Who had been off TV for some time and Virgin books’ “New Adventures” line was popular with a good chunk of remaining fans, meaning two things: loads of continuity references due to a lack of new fans, and the appearance of Bernice “Benny” Summerfield from the books as a companion. Let’s take a look at the first two stories in the collection then…
