After a rough and “out-of-period” three-part story we get some Ninth Doctor audio stories that are not only more tightly written and edited but feel far more like they belong alongside the 2005 series this Doctor originated from. The Bad Batch came out of nowhere when it was announced last year, taking the team of enhanced clones introduced in the final Clone Wars season and giving them the spotlight. That being said the true highlight of the series to me at least is the setting: immediately after Episode III so we see just how quick and frankly short-sighted the formation of the Empire was in the wake of Order 66. Throw in some classic Dave Filoni call-backs and great character moments and you have a hit! Let’s take a look…

This batch of ten episodes is where the anime team went into manga adaption overdrive as each episode is pretty much consistently two or so chapters each with very little added content, meaning that there is a LOT to cover so excuse the potential paragraph overload… Also: Aizen slashes a lot of people with his sword. The High Republic era continues (or continued at this point given how late this review is, but whatever…) as the next major novel arrives in “The Rising Storm”. It shifts focus away from the Beacon and some of the characters featured in “Light of the Jedi” and instead shows us a whole new crisis and focuses on some of the side characters from the previous novel alongside entirely new ones, overall expanding and fleshing out the cast as the story moves forward. Plus plenty more Nihil, which is always fun! So let’s take a closer look…

So I thought to myself a few weeks ago “if the special chapter isn’t just a jokey throwaway thing I might do a quick look at it on my blog, but otherwise I have enough Bleach going up at the moment…” and then suddenly not only is it full of new continuity, characters and plot but it also seemingly starts a whole new story arc! Bizarre. However it does have to be said that the first two episodes in this box do have mild pacing issues, so it’s not quite on the level of some of the earlier War Masters sets, especially if you don’t like political scheming.
