The second season of GITS SAC gets off to a strong start. 2nd Gig has a reputation of not being as good as the first season, but I think it comes down to this season being more simple with its antagonist as opposed to being more cerebral and thought-provoking, but there are still some really good episodes to be found here. Let’s take a closer look at the first half then!
Can’t say a Chinese children’s film was high on my “must watch list”, but I’m not unhappy about sitting through the film, my review of which can be found HERE. It’s a visual treat, and its heart was in the right place, even if it was little overly surreal…
The first series of GITS: SAC (“Git’s sack”… unpleasant sounding!) comes to an end, in suitably talky way. Sure there is some action, including that old cliché of “secret organisation has their secret base attacked and raided”, but it ends with a philosophical discussion, the kind that original Ghost in the Shell author Masamune Shirow would have loved (or did love, he’s not dead or anything…) Anyway, let’s have a closer look! So this was all a bit sudden (and therefore it grinded my re-watch of GITS Stand Alone Complex to a halt, so a bit of a delay on Part 2 of that one!) but I’m happy I did the last minute covering of the series, because although it started off super generic, it really picked up! My review of the 12-episode series can be found HERE.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex was one of the top anime shows of the mid-2000s, but how does it hold up today, over a decade later? Not to badly, as it turns out! Yes I was one of the people who spent nearly £100 on the 11 Blu-Ray boxset of the complete 50+ episode series and films (well, film really, I won’t be bothering to watch the OVAs that just recap the series…), so let’s take a look at the first 13, which are more stand alone than… erm, complex, I guess.
The third series in Gundam history is definitely when it fell off of a cliff, thankfully redeemed by the movie “Char’s Counterattack”, released later. Double Zeta gets off to a poor start, then manages to pick up a bit before falling again, though thankfully never as low as it was to begin with. I commend Tomino for trying something different, but… yeah. Different isn’t always good! Anyway, let’s take an overall look at ZZ then!

Double Zeta reaches its conclusion, and what an odd ride it’s been. After an extremely light-hearted first two quarters and a really downbeat third one, the fourth quarter of the show seemingly tries to balance the two, but doesn’t really succeed. Still, seeing Neo Zeon implode from within was at least fun to watch! So let’s take a look at how the series ends, shall we?
Yep, even as the show stops streaming, I’m still covering Dragon Ball Super! My review of the “Part 3” Blu-ray release can be found HERE.
Gundam ZZ finally succumbs to Gundam creator Tomino’s more bleak outlook (at the time) and the fun begins to turn into tragedy. While this quarter of ZZ isn’t devoid of humour, it’s certainly far more in line with Zeta than its first half, and possibly even pushes the “grim reality of war” button more than that did… So let’s take a look!
