Really behind at the moment thanks to work, but I refuse to let a Doctor Who review go up after the next episode has aired! I’m cutting it close this time, though! Praxeus was one of those in between episodes you get in the more arc heavy series, one that exists in its own little bubble and is perfectly fine, but you won’t really remember it a few weeks after it airs. So let’s review it!
Well, that was a bit crazy, wasn’t it? Fugitive of the Judoon on paper sounded like a pretty normal story with a returning alien race and turned out to be quite the mind bender. Since this is pre-spoiler warning, I’ll just say this: I didn’t see THAT coming, and I’ve watched, listened to and read a LOT of Doctor Who over the years! Let’s take a closer look then…
I can just about write a Bond film and a TV Doctor Who episode review a week at the moment, but I did manage to review MSG Origin V and VI for Anime UK News, which can be found HERE. I’m glad I did, because that’s another part of the UC Gundam series covered, as to when I’ll get around to Victory, I have no idea any more, but hopefully soon! (Who invented having to work for a living? Seriously…)
Tomorrow Never Dies is oddly a movie that may have become more relevant as it aged, featuring a villain that’s the head of a media empire manipulating politics by using misinformation and grabby headlines, plus a heavy focus on China as a force of good to get that sweet Chinese cinema money. Sounds far more 2017 than 1997! Key point though: is it any good? Let’s find out!
Another fun story from Series 12, this time not ruined by a heavy-handed delivery of an otherwise fine message. Another pseudo-historical for the Thirteenth Doctor, and once again it was great, informative for the younger, and just a fun episode for the older. Basically… let’s take a closer look!
Ah yes, Goldeneye, the film that’s really hard to review without making constant references to a teenhood-defining N64 game. I’ll try my best! Anyway, it’s also the debut on Pierce Bronsnan as Bond and has a great villain in Sean Bean’s Alec Trevelyan, among other fun cast members. So I’m a little late with this review, it’s been really hard to find the time, but with copious amounts of notes from the night I watched it combined with a couple of weeks to let everything settle means this will probably be a bit more calm and gathered than my immediately post-cinema review of Episode VIII from two years ago. Episode IX was, well, exactly what I feared: more JJ Abrams sticking far too rigidly to the original trilogy. It wasn’t without good moments, but it wasn’t a great follow up to the interesting ground work done beforehand… let’s take a closer look!
A little bit late with this review, but still (just) before the next-to-air episode, it’s time to put down in words my thoughts on Orphan 55. I’ll be honest, I was really enjoying it for most of its runtime, it was a good base under siege story with some properly creepy monsters, sadly there was a twist that not only didn’t really work in Who’s history, but didn’t work at all due to its lack of subtly. Timothy Dalton’s run as James Bond ends almost as soon as it began with Licence to Kill, a movie far more like a generic revenge thriller than any kind of Bond or spy film. Does that make it a bad film? Nope! It’s a fun time killer, but it’s not what I put on if I fancy a Bond film… Let’s take a look!
The new series of Doctor Who has (finally) started with a two-parter named “Spyfall”, which is at east an actual pun on “Skyfall”, unlike a certain episode last season that set me off… ANYWAY, Spyfall is Chris Chibnall’s best effort so far, which comes as a big relief after his rather poor track history in the last series. Throw in an unexpected twist and it’s a good near-two hours. Let’s take a closer look!
