As Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s fifth wave of DLC arrives so does a review of a previous entry! Mario Kart DS was easily the DS game I played the most thanks to my friend having a copy and bringing his DS round so we could play multiplayer. Playing it now I still have to applaud both the level design and graphics for the handheld, plus the amount of modes on offer. It was certainly no throw away effort, that’s for sure! I know I said the next Gundam review would be me finishing off my coverage of the Cosmic Era shows, but I do try and get reviews for the seasonal shows out as close as I can to when they aired, so you’ll have to bear-with! That being said I’m always happy to talk more about The Witch from Mercury as although parts of the ending definitely felt rushed the second half / season of the show was once again great, full of fun twists and turns and great visuals and music. The War Master is back, but sadly Solitary Confinement feels extremely safe, touching on all the usual character beats that the character brings but doing nothing new with them. Now, as I always say, Derek Jacobi is amazing in the role and carries the set through all its predictability but this time there really were some stories that I just sat and listened to without any feeling of investment in it. Ah well, let’s take a deeper look.

*sigh*, here we go then. This is the series I’ve been “dreading” rewatching for this run-down of Red Dwarf as I kind of liked it when it aired (though more for discussing new episodes of Red Dwarf with my friends than the episodes themselves) and then it went down in my eyes with each rewatch, to the point where I got to my first DVD watch I thought “I doubt I’ll ever watch that again…” and yet here we are with the Blu-ray version for the sake of this blog. I’d love to say the series has gone up in my estimation in the previous years, but nope. One episode still stands out as fun though flawed, but the series as a whole is definitely the low point of Red Dwarf. Oh well: let’s take a look, then THIS time I really won’t rewatch it again!

Street Fighter 6, it’s safe to say, overachieves in its debut, a lesson clearly learned from the poor barebones release of Street Fighter V. Not only does it have a good selection of characters old and new, not only does it have arcade mode, versus, online, and other classic modes but it also has a massive and lengthy single player campaign complete with create-a-fighter facilities and open world elements plus an online hub complete with old arcade games you can play and compete against others on. Out of character in a very good way! Let’s take a more detailed look.

Ufotable are back for another chunk of Demon Slayer adaptation, but I have to say that this time round I wasn’t as invested. Don’t get me wrong, the animation is still often jaw-dropping but the plot felt so samey to what’s come before that I honestly found myself less and less interested as it went along. A lot of people were really high on this movie so I was expecting another rare positive review in this marathon of almost entirely poor films but sadly I was mistaken, the great opening scene released online was a misdirection as pretty much everything AFTER the opening is … not very good. The movie is lucky Annihilation exists, otherwise this would look extremely poor indeed. Oh well, let’s take a closer look and see if it can at least score as well as the most recent game released before this did!

The next “game to live action movie marathon” at least has an accompanying game this time! Yes, the reboot Mortal Kombat movie is under the microscope and due to that it made the most sense to look at the most recent (as of this review) MK game, given a lot of the visual identity and extremely gory fatalities seen in the film are based off of the most recent efforts. I enjoyed my time with MK11, but I’m glad I waited for it to be cheap (and with all the DLC) as it’s never been my favourite fighting game franchise, and some decisions made in its design are, um, questionable, to say the least. Let’s take a look!

The early War Doctor adventures continue with another trio of stories and this time the middle story, Berserker, is fantastic. Being the middle story I couldn’t separate it into its own review but it really does deserve more spotlight, not that “A Mother’s Love” is bad either.
