So, along with the Twin Dilemma (already reviewed) and Paradise Towers, The Web Planet was one of the stories I was least looking forward to re-watching one day for this blog. I convinced myself that my dislike for it probably came from the mistake of watching all six parts in a row back when the DVD came out, so I watched it in three lots of two episodes this time and… nope, still extremely boring and super cringey in places. I do admire how far they went with how little money they had, it’s an impressive story for a 60s British TV serial (well, apart from the Zarbi…) but still doesn’t make it very fun to watch… So, let’s get it out the way then, shall we?

Doctor Who: The Annihilators Review
I was so excited when I heard they were doing a new seven-part full cast story set in Season 7, then I found out Nicholas Briggs was writing it and I got downhearted as his big boxset releases recently haven’t been … well, very good to be frank. Then I heard they were adding a newly recast Second Doctor played by Patrick Troughton’s son Michael into the mix and I was just … confused. Well, I’m thrilled to report that despite all this I really enjoyed the story! Mr. Briggs pulls one out of the bag at the right time for me personally (well, maybe the first ever Ninth Doctor set would’ve been a better time to do it, but hey-ho…) and even the multi-Doctor part was fun. So let’s take a look at “The Annihilators”, shall we?
Continue readingDoctor Who: The Reign of Terror Review
We’re kicking off the next and rather long phase of “older Doctor Who reviews to stick in gaps on the blog” with The Reign of Terror, a story I’d only watched once before doing it again for this review. I remembered it being quite good and liking the animation, but I can only guess the more recent animated efforts have ruined the latter part of that because… yikes. Anyway, is it still “quite good” or was that the excitement of seeing animated episodes clouding it? Let’s find out!
Continue readingDoctor Who: Peladon – The Death of Peladon & The Truth of Peladon Review
The second half of Big Finish’s Peladon boxset is far more straight forward in that they very much feel like stand-alone Sixth and Eighth Doctor stories that just happen to be set on Peladon. They also take place further in the planet’s timeline than we’ve ever gone before, which is something I was hoping for from the boxset but didn’t get in the first half. So… let’s take a look!
Continue readingDoctor Who: Peladon – The Ordeal of Peladon & The Poison of Peladon Review
I wasn’t particularly interested in the idea of a whole box of Peladon set stories, though I do enjoy the two TV stories and the Fifth Doctor audio set on the planet I wasn’t convinced… but then they revealed the Sixth and Eighth Doctors were appearing (in the next half…) and so I jumped on board. Happily these fight two stories still quite fun, and not entirely Doctor-less either… Let’s take a look!
Continue readingDoctor Who: The Further Adventuress – The Slaying of the Writhing Mass & Heart of Orion Review
The second half of the “Further Adventuress” (and boy is that B-Sharps style joke that gets less funny the more you hear it…) is sadly weaker than the first half, but not by much. The combination of the Eighth Doctor and Charley without any overarching … erm, arc is still a very fun and comforting experience, and even Mr. Biggs manages to pull off one of his better stories in recent memory! So let’s take a look…
Continue readingDoctor Who: The Further Adventuress – The Mummy Speaks! and Eclipse Review
One of my all-time favourite Doctor-companion combinations have been reunited to celebrate 20 years since their debut appearance, which is weird to think that these audio dramas have been going on for so long! Yes The Eighth Doctor and Charley Pollard have been given four 1-hour stories set early in their run (so less story arc heavy) and these first two have been very fun to listen to, even if their format feels more like the Lucie Miller era of the Eighth Doctor… So let’s take a look!
Continue readingThe Diary of River Song: Series 3 – My Dinner With Andrew & The Furies Review
The third series of The Diary of River Song closes out in pretty much the same way it opened, with a really clever and enjoyable first half, then a not-as-memorable second half, though at least the ending wraps things up nicely. So let’s take a closer look and fill in this gap in series’ coverage on this blog, shall we?
Continue readingDoctor Who: Forty – God of War Review
The second half of the first Forty box set at least focuses more on the Fifth Doctor that it’s supposed to be celebrating. This story sees the later version of this Doctor arriving in his own past, faced with Adric alive and well. It at least makes better use of the concept than the Second Doctor-heavy first half, anyway! Let’s take a look!
Continue readingDoctor Who: Forty – Secrets of Telos Review
The era of three-disc boxsets for Doctors 5-7 begins with “Forty”, the first of two Fifth Doctor boxsets celebrating forty years since Peter Davison’s debut in the role. Oddly the first of the two stories, “Secrets of Telos”, is far more a celebration of Second Doctor classic Tomb of the Cybermen than it is anything to do with the Fifth Doctor. Whether you feel this is a bad thing or not aside, is the story any good on its own merits? Let’s take a look!
