War of the Sontarans is 90% a really good stand-alone Sontaran story and 10% a continuation of the Flux story arc, and it works really well! It’s nice seeing the titular potato-headed foes get a classic series inspired makeover and feel like a threat again (while still retaining the absurd humour aspect as well) and while it’s not exactly a flawless episode it was very entertaining! I was of two minds about how to cover Doctor Who’s thirteenth series (since the revival) as it’s being billed as one six-part story titled “Flux”. It’s that time again! Another mostly missing serial has been given the full animation treatment and this time it’s the seven part Dalek epic “The Evil of the Daleks”, a story that at the time was meant to write the titular aliens out of the show for good. Taking place in then-modern England, Victorian England and the planet Skaro itself it does a lot to justify its runtime, but does it do enough, or does it suffer from obvious padding? Let’s find out!

The Web of Fear was just released on Blu-Ray with a (badly) animated Episode 3, so it’s time to take a look! Web of Fear holds a special place in my heart because pre-2013 it was one of the few stories I really enjoyed despite being almost entirely photo-slide recon and then in 2013 it was discovered whole! (though sadly Episode 3, the episode that features the debut appearance of future Brigadier Allister Lethbridge-Stewart, was nicked before they were picked up…) Watching Web of Fear with just one episode of Recon was great, but what’s it like now, with an … experimental animated Episode 3? Season 24 dropped on Blu-ray last week so it’s time to review a random story from it. It would’ve been easy to pick Paradise Towers (*shudder*) or Delta and the Bannermen because they’re so obviously… erm, what they are in tone, but I decided instead to look at Dragonfire, which I actually enjoy where as many people don’t. Do I still enjoy it? Did I really pick Dragonfire because I want to put off re-watching Paradise Towers as long as I can?! Let’s find out! A new Doctor Who Blu-Ray set has dropped and that means it’s time for a random review from it! Colony in Space was the story that I hadn’t seen in the longest, but was it because it’s crap? No, not really! It has a bad reputation among fandom for being boring, but I don’t know if it’s just my love for the Third Doctor era, but I really enjoy it. It may be missing the UNIT team but it does at least have some great Doctor / Master scenes! Let’s take a look…

Doctor Who returned to our screens with a New Year’s special, and a special featuring The Daleks no less! Sadly it also features some of head writer Chris Chibnall’s worse aspects, especially some political jabs that were, thankfully, out of date by the time this episode aired, but therefore making them a rather unpleasant reminder. Still, it also featured the proper, full-on return of Captain Jack Harkness, who frankly stole the show! … So let’s take a look!

There is a sense of “it’s about time” with this review as it aired while this blog was in full swing, as evidence from the following series being covered as it aired, but I remember being really busy that Christmas and a few weeks later I hadn’t written a review for it, and it was too long since I saw it. So, here we are! “The Return of Doctor Mysterio” is a tongue-in-cheek look at the Superhero genre, specifically Superman, which while not exactly Christmassy it did at least lend itself to having a lot of fun.
