The Fourth Doctor Adventures for this year are set while The Doctor is travelling alone, which is a rare setting for this particular incarnation, and the first story is a really strong outing set entirely in a library on a moon of Gallifrey, which is also a unique and very fun setting but sadly it also features the cancelled-due-to-being-a-twat James Dreyfus incarnation of the Master… Oh well, let’s take a look!

Mind of the Hodiac is an interesting curio, it’s not a “Lost Story” in any way that the sub series has explored before, instead it’s a piece of fan fiction that Russell T. Davies wrote as a teenager that he found in a drawer. Admittedly given RTD’s contributions to Doctor Who having what is essentially his first script turned into a story is a fun idea, but it’s still not exactly fitting in with the Lost Stories theme. The Stranded run of Eighth Doctor stories reaches its conclusion… I was going to put “epic conclusion” but that wouldn’t be right, for better or worse. The Invasion is not only a rare eight-part story, not only features the debut of UNIT but it’s also the first story to ever receive animated missing episodes. On top of all that it has Cybermen in it, which admittedly isn’t very rare for the Second Doctor story, but there you go. That being said they only appear in half of it anyway as it does take a good while for the invading to actually happen… thankfully the human villain in the story is very entertaining! It’s always interesting to look back at the debut story of an iconic enemy, seeing which parts of their character / their race lasted and what was added as they went along. In the case of the Ice Warriors their debut story is actually a very basic Second Doctor “base under siege” story with about the only impressive thing about them being their costume design.
