Doctor Who: The Five Doctors Review

The Five Doctors has to be one of my favourite “comfort food” things to put on, if I’m not really sure what to watch or for whatever reason feeling unhappy it’s something that will cheer me up for 90 minutes or so. That being said this is a review and to be completely fair to it the story really isn’t up to much, it’s a big anniversary special with loads of companions and, well, four Doctors to be more accurate, plus a few old villains and the like so it doesn’t really have time to be anything with more substance. Am I just making excuses? Well, let’s take a closer look…

Doctor Who: The Two Doctors Review

As we near the end of our Multi-Doctor catch-up marathon we’re left with the original three TV serials, with “The Two Doctors” being a bit of the odd one out as it wasn’t to celebrate any kind of anniversary but instead the producers at the time saw how successful “The Five Doctors” had been and decided to do it again! So we have the Second Doctor and Jamie join the Sixth Doctor and Peri in the middle of Season 22 for no real reason, in a story partially filmed on location in Spain, also for no real reason! Plus it’s a three-parter but at a time when each episode was the length of two regular episodes, making this effectively a six-part story which in the 80s was practically unheard of. In other words “The Two Doctors” is a very odd story, but is it a fun story to watch?

Doctor Who: Dimensions in Time Review

Now, “Dimensions in Time” is a tricky one because technically it doesn’t feature two Doctors interacting but given it has multiple Doctors and companions and its an anniversary story I felt I couldn’t skip over it… plus if I don’t do it now I never will! So for those not aware “Dimensions in Time” was a 1993 Children in Need 3-D charity sketch (spread over two nights) to celebrate the series 30th anniversary, but due to it being off the air for three years all we got was this, which given it also crosses over with forever-popular soap Eastenders and had a phone-in vote to decide what some of the soap’s cast did shows how the show was viewed by the BBC at the time… Let’s take a look anyway, and not worry about if its canon or not!

Doctor Who: Time Crash Review

Well, this is going to be a short review! “Time Crash” is barely a five minute sketch from Children in Need where the Fifth Doctor ends up on board the Tenth Doctor’s TARDIS. The thing is doing the multi-Doctor Marathon means I can’t ignore it but I can’t slot it in another review either, so… Get ready for a very brief read! (but a very fun sketch, to be fair!)

Doctor Who: The Name of the Doctor Review

Reviewing “The Name of the Doctor” feels like it’s overdue as during my “Doctor Debut Marathon” several years back I said this story should’ve been the story covered for John Hurt’s War Doctor but as he only appeared in the very end I went with his first audio story instead. Now all these years later and I realise that under my rules for this Multi-Doctor Marathon the couple of sentences The Eleventh Doctor and the War Doctor share actually make it count! So here we finally are. Honestly this story also has lots of the other Doctors appearing either via archive footage or people walking past the camera in-costume, so it fits the anniversary-feel of multi-Doctor stories if nothing else. Let’s take a look!

Doctor Who: Mawdryn Undead Review

Doctor Who Season 20 was released on Blu-ray a short while ago so it’s time to look at the story I haven’t seen in the longest time off the set, in this case I couldn’t remember which out of this and the following story, Terminus, I hadn’t seen so I went with the earliest of the two *shrugs* I mean, I’ll review them all eventually… Mawdryn is an odd one, mainly because the role of returning character changed from Ian Chesterton to the Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart but the role in the story of “older teacher” wasn’t changed, making for an odd out-of-character rewrite for the Brig that infamously cemented the “UNIT Dating controversy”. It’s also the story that debuts companion Turlough and boy, he is not very likeable to start with… Let’s take a look!

Doctor Who: The Time Monster Review

Another Blu-Ray Season set release, another review! Season 9 is one I’ve frequently revisited over the years due to my love of the Pertwee era but The Time Monster (and its preceding story The Mutants) are ones I’ve watched less due to them being… quite dull. Well, the Mutants anyway, this at least has plenty of UNIT and Delgado Master in it, that always livens things up which is why it’s funny it’s the one it’s been longest since I last watched. Have I forgotten something I disliked about it? Is the weird silver birdman Kronos just too weird? Let’s find out!

Doctor Who: The Crusade Review

Due to life getting in the way of things I haven’t really left the black and white era of TV Who on this blog and yet here we are back reviewing a Hartnell story thanks to the release of Season 2 on Blu-ray. Once again I decided to go with the story that I haven’t seen in the longest time and so that meant “The Crusade”, mainly because half of it is missing and it’s just not an interesting enough story to want to watch through a photo recon of half of it. This is only the second time I’ve watched it and third overall experiencing it despite being such a big fan of the show for so many years (I listened to the soundtrack only at one point to see if it helped…). Does this admittedly better recon job help, or is it still just… not very good? Let’s find out!

Doctor Who: The Power of the Doctor Review

The Power of the Doctor is a weird one, because on the one hand I thoroughly enjoyed myself for the whole 70 minutes but on the other hand I’m pretty sure that was entirely due to all the classic Who callbacks and cameos rather than the actual story of the Thirteenth Doctor’s regeneration, which the lead up to was classic Chris Chibnall in that it touched upon some interesting storylines but refused to end … pretty much any of them. Oh well! At least I enjoyed it!

Doctor Who: The Abominable Snowmen Review

The next, and sadly last for the foreseeable future, animated missing Doctor Who story has arrived in the large and hairy shape of “The Abominable Snowmen”, the first story to feature the Great Intelligence and his robotic Yeti, a fact that has become more important after the discovery of most of its sequel story roughly a decade back. It’s also a rare story in that I only experienced it once in my life prior to this, as a photo recon with the only existing episode (Episode 2) in the middle, and it was so dull I never wanted to go back to it again. Does the animated version improve the experience? Let’s find out!
