24: Day 3 – 1:00am to 1:00pm Review

My review of the first half of Season 3 can be read by clicking HERE.

In case you were wondering, no I haven’t forgotten about 24’s third season, it’s just a combination of new TV series and a plot that unfortunately and rather depressingly hits home at the moment made it hard to get through some of the middle episodes of this batch. Still, there are some moments in these episodes that are all-time classics, so let’s take a look!

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie – Mugen Train Review

Demon Slayer was the big hit a two years ago, with gorgeous Ufotable animation and a decent Shonen story to boot but I don’t think anyone could have predicted this film’s success! Collecting accolades like the biggest Japanese box office success EVER and the very top film of 2020 worldwide (okay, that one isn’t as impressive given the whole pandemic thing, but still!) is this film THAT good? Well, no, I’m sure what could be, but I will say that it is a good watch, being an adaptation of a manga arc rather than a spin-off like other Shonen films adds to it, certainly. Let’s take a closer look!

The Diary of River Song: Series 9 “New Recruit” – The Blood Woods & Terror of the Suburbs Review

After having grown disinterested in the Diary of River Song series (mostly when it stopped featuring Doctors, I only have so much money to spend on Doctor Who Audio Dramas!) I’ve jumped back in with Series 9, dubbed “New Recruit” because it features River arriving in Season 7 era Who and joining up with The Brig and Liz Shaw in place of The Doctor (although he does appear in the final episode…) Given this is among my favourite time periods of the show I can say I was really looking forward to it. Does it live up to my hype? Let’s find out!

Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 (PS1) Review

The announcement of the “definitive edition” of the PS2 GTA trilogy made me look forward to plugging back through those games and eventually reviewing them for this site, so since I reviewed the original GTA back in 2016 (right at the start of my blog!) I thought I’d cap off the PS1 era of GTA before getting stuck into the remastered PS2 games. Before we get to GTA2 however we have the side-step (or “Expansion Pack”) from the original game: GTA London 1969, the only GTA game set outside of the states. Full of a humour, crime and a groovy 60s soundtrack I always enjoy my time with this game… for a while. Let’s take a look!

Doctor Who: Flux – The Halloween Apocalypse Review

I was of two minds about how to cover Doctor Who’s thirteenth series (since the revival) as it’s being billed as one six-part story titled “Flux”. As we got nearer the date though I thought to myself, if there is ever a series to cover each episode on this blog it’s Doctor Who, and given each episode has its own subtitle all the better. So here we are! Chapter 1 of “Flux”, subtitled “The Halloween Apocalypse”. Was it any good? Let’s take a look…

Star Wars Legends: Heir to the Empire Review

I remember when I was still in school and one of my friends had the “Thrawn Trilogy” of Star Wars books and him telling me “what happened after the films”, at that point referring to just the three, possibly with Episode 1 on the horizon. I was interested, they sounded good, but at that age I’m afraid to say reading a book just wasn’t something that interested me. Fast forward a few decades and I thought to myself “I’m enjoying these High Republic books, maybe I should go back and experience the original sequel trilogy now we have an actual one” … So here we are! My first dip into the “Legends Timeline” on this blog, and my first time reading Heir to the Empire. What was it like? Very good, funnily enough…

The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires Review

So this is how Hammer Dracula ends, not with a bang but with a … cheesy 70s Kung-Fu film?! Yes, “The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires” was a co-production between Hammer and a Hong Kong film company, seeking to blend horror with the booming martial arts genre. Peter Cushing was all for… a free trip to China, but Christopher Lee had finally had enough so Dracula was instead played by John Forbes-Robertson (no idea either). So is this any good, either as a horror film or as a martial arts film? … Not really. Let’s take a closer look anyway, because it’s Halloween and nothing is more spooky than karate guys thrust-kicking vampires!

The Satanic Rites of Dracula Review

The Satanic Rites of Dracula is an odd one. It’s the final Christopher Lee Dracula film but it honestly feels like a completely different movie that they forced Dracula and Peter Cushing’s Van Helsing into for the hell of it. It’s more like a thriller to do with a satanic cult being investigated than anything else, complete with lots of sitting around, developing photos, making plans and other such espionage stuff… plus a world ending threat, for added over-the-top cartoon villainy! Does this mishmash of genres work? … No. Let’s have a look anyway!

Dracula A.D. 1972 Review

As the title of the film suggests the next entry in the Hammer Dracula series sees the titular count resurrect in then-modern day England, though instead of following on from Scars it rewrites the continuity entirely, opening with a new showdown between Peter Cushing’s Van Helsing and Christopher Lee’s Dracula from 12 years before the original film was set. Is this reboot any good? Let’s find out!

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai (Episodes 38 – 50) Review

Oh yes, that’s right. Before we get to a few more stand-alone anime reviews and then the next bigger series / story arc we have another chunk of DQ: Adventure of Dai episodes to get through! What adventures await? … Actually, to be fair, these episodes were mostly good it’s just the series has started to outstay its welcome, which given a new opening starts the next batch I’m assuming we’re not as close to the end as I thought / hoped…
