Sadly after a really strong run of stories for this TARDIS team, we finally hit a story that I just didn’t care for. It wasn’t awful, but it was certainly dull, and did little to nothing with the companions… A shame, but you can’t win them all! Let’s take a closer look…
Continuing my look through the Doctor Who Magazine “Doorway to Hell” graphic novel we get the next two stories, Bloodsport and Be Forgot, before we get to the “main event”, so to speak. Bloodsport is a perfectly fine little tale with a rather bluntly delivered message, and Be Forgot is a rather harrowingly realistic portrayal of a man suffering from mental health issues… which is nice to see portrayed now and again, and so well too. Let’s take a look at them!
After getting it as a Christmas present, I’m finally actually reading the latest Doctor Who Magazine collected comic release, “Doorway to Hell”, starting with these two stories! The Pestilent Heart is a good little story, and sets up a new and fun status quo going into at least the next few stories. Moving In? … Erm. Yeah. Not so good. Still, let’s take a look!
A four part Fourth Doctor story written by John Dorney? Yes please! A handy effect of the FDAs being split into two four-story boxsets is getting to hear a four-part story straight away, rather than waiting a month in between halves. This story has a lot of things similar to popular neo-noir and far future set stories like a Blade Runner or a Total Recall, but manages to be pretty unique at the same time… oh and really good too! Let’s take a look!
The second story in the seventh Fourth Doctor Adventures series is a fun take on the “character trapped in a convincing dream, can they escape back to reality?” cliché, that serves Leela well as a character, which is good as she’s so often just a generic savage in so many of these releases! Let’s take a closer look…
The seventh season of Fourth Doctor Adventures kicks off a new “Four stories in one boxset twice yearly” format for the series, and does so with a story that’s… alright. Hmmm… kind of the overall feel of most of the range at this point, Sons of Kaldor is good, but unremarkable, going to show that a change of release format (and the return of the Voc Robots) hasn’t ironed out the kinks the series has. Still, let’s take a look!
The Doctor Who main range begins 2018 with a bang, as Kingdom of Lies is a blast to listen too. We return to the new (to Big Finish) quartet of The Doctor, Adric, Nyssa and Tegan, and once again the bigger cast is handled well and the story in general is a good laugh with some fun twists and turns. Let’s take a closer look!
Here’s a more unique Top 10 at least! My choice of Top 10 Doctor Who stories (of any medium, though I have fallen behind on the comics, so… sorry comic creators!) released in 2017. Let’s get to it, because you just can’t have enough Top 10s on New Year’s Eve!
Here we are, the last Doctor Who review of 2017… and it’s a cracker! The Wreck of the World is not only the best Early Adventures I’ve heard, but might be the best 2nd Doctor audio story in general. Good twisty plot, full of great characters and the lead trio have plenty of great dialogue and moments between them. What a great way to end the year!
A little late with the main range this month, but that was solely due to not wanting to “over-Who” my blog by putting the audio releases up at the same time as the Regeneration Marathon. Anyway! Static concludes this three release… “season”? … of Sixth Doctor stories with Constance and Flip, and does so in a really well told, creepy fashion! Let’s take a look…
