Blade Runner Review

Blade Runner

Much like when I start to look at the Star Wars films and I pondered “how do I review the original Star Wars?”, I have to repeat that process by saying “How do I review Blade Runner?” I wanted to review the sequel, 2049, so I thought I’d do them together, but what is there left to say about the original? It has to be among the most looked at films, the most often broken down into its component parts, the most examined both from a visual and a storytelling viewpoint. I guess the only thing to do is just do it! Say what I like, and if you want something super in-depth I’m sure a quick google search will grant you a look at the film from every possible perspective. So, without further ado: Blade Runner! (the “Final Cut” version, for the record…)

Battlestar Galactica – Season 3 Episodes 1 – 10 Review

BSG S3 P1

Battlestar Galactica’s third season is where things get really interesting… a couple of times, and the rest of the time things seem to slow to a crawl. Luckily for this review most of a slower paced, non-key storyline episodes fall in the latter half of the season, so this is mostly full of praise! Let’s take a look…

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service Review

OHMSS

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, otherwise known as “the George Lazenby one”, is an odd film. I’ve properly watched this three times now, once on VHS, once on DVD and now once on Blu-ray, and I think I’ve had a different opinion each time. I thought it was boring, thought it was a good spy story with a great ending, and now I’m somewhere in between the two, though leaning towards boring. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look!

Doctor Who: The Mind Runners / The Demon Rises Review

DW Mind Runners Demon Rises

A four part Fourth Doctor story written by John Dorney? Yes please! A handy effect of the FDAs being split into two four-story boxsets is getting to hear a four-part story straight away, rather than waiting a month in between halves. This story has a lot of things similar to popular neo-noir and far future set stories like a Blade Runner or a Total Recall, but manages to be pretty unique at the same time… oh and really good too! Let’s take a look!

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam – Episodes 43 – 50 Review

Zeta Gundam P5

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam comes to its grizzly and depressing conclusion! Yes, it’s well known now that creator Yoshiyuki Tomino fell into depression during the course of Zeta, leading to the extremely dark ending to the series, and … yep, it is that, but is it still enjoyable, in a sick, “realistic war scenario” kind of way? Let’s find out!

Battlestar Galactica – Razor Review

BSG Razor

Razor was produced and aired in between Seasons 3 and 4, but it’s set in the latter quarter of Season 2, so I’ll put it here. To be honest, with the exception of a cryptic warning at the end of the TV film, there isn’t really any spoilers here, and even that is so cryptic that it will invoke more interest in seeing the rest of the show if you haven’t before. Either way Razor is not only set during Apollo’s start as the head of the Battlestar Pegasus, but it also features flashbacks to the several hinted-at incidents from Admiral Cain’s reign as commander, as well as a flashback to a young William Adama during the First Cylon War (at least in the extended version, I think they were online minisodes originally). Plenty of nice nods to the original series as well, which I now get! Hooray! Let’s take a closer look…

Doctor Who: The Crowmarsh Experiment Review

DW Crowmarsh Experiment

The second story in the seventh Fourth Doctor Adventures series is a fun take on the “character trapped in a convincing dream, can they escape back to reality?” cliché, that serves Leela well as a character, which is good as she’s so often just a generic savage in so many of these releases! Let’s take a closer look…

The Gifted – Season 1 Overall Review

Gifted S1

The Gifted was announced around the same time Legion was on the air, and if you saw my Legion review or my Top 10 TV shows list, you’ll know how much I loved that show. The Gifted is far more straight forward X-Men based show, though admittedly without the X-Men themselves and instead a cast of lesser known or original mutants. It’s a perfectly fine show that’s faithful to the core idea of the X-Men franchise, but it also plays it very safe. Let’s have a look as its first season, then, shall we?
