What’s this? Reviewing a story in the month it was released?! I know, it’s been a while playing catch up… Anyway, “Pursuit of the Nightjar” is frankly a sleeper hit as I had no real excitement about this release but it blew me away with its writing, setting and over-arching plot, so let’s take a look!
Continue readingX-Men: The Animated Series – Season 2 Review
The second season of the animated X-Men series has an over-arching plot across all 12 episodes though really it’s mainly short cut-away sequences that don’t go anywhere until we get to the two-part finale. It was an interesting choice but I don’t feel it worked well. Luckily though a lot of the actual episodes are really fun and feature some pretty deep cuts from Marvel lore mixed with interesting looks at our titular heroes… so let’s take a look!
Continue readingDragon Ball – 23rd Tenkaichi Tournament Arc (Episodes 133 – 139) Review
After what seems like forever it’s time to wrap up the original Dragon Ball series with the final arc (and that mini filler arc the anime team added afterwards…) What always strikes me about this arc is how it’s the exact opposite of the 22nd TB arc in that there is very nearly no filler whatsoever making it back-to-back fights with little breaks. The one-day tournament is back to actually being a one-day tournament! So let’s take a look at the preliminaries and the opening round, shall we?
Continue readingDoctor Who: Once and Future – Two’s Company Review
Big Finish continues with its bizarre slap-dash 60th Anniversary “Once and Future” series with the most random line up of them all. How about jamming the Sixth Doctor, an older Harry Sullivan, Jackie Tyler and Lady Christina (you know, from that one Tenth Doctor TV story…) plus an earlier incarnation of The Eleven in The Two all together? Bloody hell… does it work? Not really, but it could’ve been far worse let’s put it that way…
Continue readingMass Effect 3: Legendary Edition (PS4) Review
It’s time to cap off my first ever run-through of the Mass Effect Trilogy (via the PS4 Legendary Edition) by taking a look at the controversial third entry. All I really knew is that people didn’t like the ending so they patched in new cutscenes with more context and stuff but people still weren’t generally happy, but by the time the credits rolled I didn’t mind the ending really. Well, the one I got anyway, though again that obviously has all the added stuff from after people complained… Anyway, I did find things I didn’t like about the plot and gameplay, so it’s definitely a step down from ME2 as the general consensus seems to be, so let’s take a deeper look and find out why!
Continue readingStar Wars: The High Republic – The Edge of Balance: Precedent Review
Ignoring the overly long title I enjoyed reading this one-off volume of Star Wars High Republic Manga, which focuses on the Phase 2 battle with the Path of the Open Hand as well as featuring scenes set in the “present”, or Phases 1/3 era, thanks to the book focusing on Arkoff and Wookie’s having such a long life span. So let’s take a look!
Continue readingDoctor Who: Travel in Hope – Run Review
When I saw the synopsis for “Run” I felt a cold shiver go up my spine as it sounded like another ham-fisted attempt at political satire like “The Salurian Candidate”, and while thankfully it never sank that low it’s still as subtle as a brick to the face and not very clever to boot, so it didn’t make for a good hour’s listen. Oh well, let’s take a look…
Continue readingDragon Ball: Final Bout (PS1) Review
I know what you’re thinking, “Didn’t you just say how much you hated Ultimate Battle 22 and you waited until the PS2 games came out?” Why yes, and that’s still true, but what I did do was at some point in between Budokai 1 and 2 I found Final Bout in a second-hand games shop for a couple of pounds and thought “why not?”, assuming it was a poorer man’s Tekken or Street Fighter EX, not knowing of course that it was literally UB22 but with 3D graphics instead. *sigh*. Still, by covering this now it means whenever I get to the first chunk of Z films I can review the Budokai trilogy one after another, so that’s nice, plus there’s something fitting about review a GT-heavy game while reviewing the Dragon Ball film that was released while GT was airing and featured GT elements… It sort of matches! Let’s take a look!
Continue readingDragon Ball: The Path to Power Review
The fourth Dragon Ball film is a real oddity as it was actually created after all 13 Dragon Ball Z films and was released as Dragon Ball GT was airing, meaning there is a noticeable uptick in animation quality; some of the designs were redone, especially Goku as he is literally the Kid Goku from DBGT complete with yellow trousers and pink armbands (at least later in the film), and there are moments of definite Z/GT style “powering up”. Despite all this though it re-adapts the first story arc (again!) but adds in the Red Ribbon Army instead of Pilaf (I’d say “again!” but the RRA here is mostly the characters not used in the previous film) so it definitely fits into the same mould as the three previous DB films, just with higher production values and a longer runtime. Does it work? Let’s take a look!
Continue readingSonic The Hedgehog 2 Review
Let’s once again end a run of “Game to Live Action Movies” with a Sonic movie funnily enough as we take a look at Sonic The Hedgehog 2, a sequel to one of those extremely rare things known as a good game adaptation (and a great game in its own right!). Thankfully Sonic 2 manages to keep the momentum going and deliver another fun film with more Jim Carrey insanity, the debut of Tails and Knuckles and even more original MegaDrive Sonic references for me to smirk at. Let’s take a look!
