Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks Review

DW The Power of the Daleks

I’ve experienced Power of the Daleks, which is entirely lost, four different ways now. I first listened to the soundtrack CD, then I watched a photo recon before watching the animated version after it came out two years ago. For this review I watched the blu-ray colourised version of the animated edition… I wonder what will happen when I watch it a fifth time! Anyway, Patrick Troughton’s debut story is a great one, it doesn’t actually hang on the idea of a new Doctor very long and instead tells a tense Dalek story where for five episodes the viewers watch on, waiting for the Daleks to turn on the humans, and when they do: yikes! Modern Who wishes it could have Daleks this threatening… Let’s take a closer look, then!

Doctor Who: An Unearthly Child Review

DW An Unearthly Child

How can I properly frame the importance of this episode? It should seem obvious being the very first episode, but it establishes pretty much everything: The Doctor is an alien with a police box that’s bigger on the inside than the outside, that can travel in both time and space. The imagination in Episode 1 for the time is still great today, it’s just a shame about Episodes 2 – 4, which decides to tell a relatively slow story about cavemen… Ah well, let’s have a good look overall and kick off the Doctor Debut Story countdown, shall we?

Doctor Who – Doctor Debut Marathon starting on Monday!

14doctors

As predicted (by me!) back when I did the Regeneration Marathon, which counted down to the Twelfth Doctor’s swan-song, it’s time to countdown to the Thirteenth Doctor’s debut! As per usual when I do a daily marathon this won’t effect any non-Who related reviews going up, especially the “Shonen Jump! 50th Anniversary Top 5 Debut Arcs” countdown, which will finish over the next two weeks, but there will be fewer non-Who reviews because… well, there are fewer non-Who reviews to go up anyway! Click more down below to see the line up, otherwise I’ll see you tomorrow!

Mega Man 4 (NES) Review

Mega Man 4

My first play through of the Mega Man series continues with Mega Man 4. It’s pretty Mega Man-by-numbers, though the addition of the charge shot makes it feel closer to later, Mega Man X-style games to me (obviously at the time it was just a new idea in general!) Also Dr. Wiley is gone! Replaced with Dr. Cossack… who was being forced to do bad by Dr. Wiley. Oh well! Let’s have a look!

Doctor Who: The Harvest Review

DW The Harvest

The audio / comic companion intro marathon reaches Hex, one of the best original companions who, along with Evelyn for the Sixth Doctor and Charley for the Eighth, form a trio of great audio only companions during the 2000s / early 2010s for Big Finish. Hex’s arc is long and somewhat complicated, but it’s extremely fun (well, apart from the final trilogy of stories…) so I’m looking forward to one day running through them all again. Anyway! Hex’s debut story, The Harvest, is a great, tense story with the Cybermen being used in a really clever way. Let’s have a closer look!

Iron Fist – Season 2 Overall Review

Iron Fist S2

Iron Fist Season 2 is a far, far better season than its first. While not perfect, Season 2 at least has characters you care about, it’s shorter in length, lacks big business boardroom meetings and has lots of well choreographed fight scenes. Roasting Iron Fist Season 1 was one of the first posts to go up on this blog, so it’s nice to see the follow up be far more fun to review. Well… let’s have a look then!

One Piece – East Blue Arc (Episodes 1 – 30) Review

One Piece EBArc P1

One Piece is, if nothing else, epic in length. Whenever I cover the show I’ll be doing it in much bigger chunks of episodes than I normally do, though given this chunk of 30 episodes doesn’t even end what most people consider to be the opening “arc”, it’s not going to make covering the show any less of a daunting task. Anyway, One Piece grabs the bronze in this Jump! 50th Anniversary opening arc list of mine as it does a good job of introducing you to our lead, but a fantastic job of making us care about the rest of the crew. It was really hard deciding between this and the #2 spot! So let’s look at the first half of the East Blue arc, which really contains a bunch of smaller arcs that introduce us to several of the cast members going forward…

Iron Fist – Season 2 Episodes 6 – 10 Review

Iron Fist S2 P2

The second half of Iron Fist Season 2 manages to continue the momentum from the first half and deliver a satisfying conclusion. The sheer difference in quality between seasons 1 and 2 is staggering, but that doesn’t mean this season is flawless… So let’s take a look and see just how many different Iron Fists one season can cram in!

Doctor Who: The Dispossessed Review

DW The Dispossessed

The latest Main Range release, The Dispossessed, has some good ideas tucked in it somewhere, but much like Paradise Towers that it references so much, the good ideas are buried in a bunch of bad, over-the-top acting and in this case, a really clumsy amount of exposition explained via a simple conversation pattern. More info, you say? Read on!

Doctor Who: Colditz Review

DW Colditz.jpg

Elizabeth Klein is one of the odder “companions” of The Doctor. She starts off as an alternate reality Nazi, ends up in our reality, and then… well, lot’s of other stuff, but concentrating on her debut story you’d probably think I made some sort of mistake. Klein’s next three stories form one of the best “trilogies” in the main range, but since this all about debut stories, we have Colditz, one of the earlier stories from Big Finish, but a great little look into all sides of World War II through the eyes of soldiers and inmates of the infamous castle, plus David Tennant’s first Doctor Who role thrown in! Let’s take a look…
