Samurai 8 Vol 1

First off, my review of Samurai 8’s first manga volume is available HERE. I … didn’t like it. At all. Bollocks.

ALSO: With all that’s going on in the world, I thought I’d just confirm that as of this moment my life is proceeding as usual, though given I work in a Library right in the centre of town, I wouldn’t be surprised if it closed in a few days. The only really knock on effect of the Corona Virus outbreak is that I’m delaying the last four Bond Film reviews until October, assuming No Time To Die sticks to November 2020 as a release date, all because, damn it, the Bond film marathon was supposed to lead up to the new film, so… third time’s the charm?!

Who would have thought that Chris Chibnall, someone whose first series of Doctor Who had practically no connections to the show’s past, would suddenly drop a massive continuity bomb that would shake the very foundation of Who history forever? Not me! Plus underneath the major continuity shaking and another great performance by Sacha Dhawan as The Master is a really good Cybermen story, with a great new redesign to boot! So this past Sunday’s new Doctor Who was the first half of a two-parter, so … here’s a new Doctor Who review anyway! Yes, Season 26 was released on Blu-Ray a few weeks ago and so it’s time to review a story from the set, in this case: The Curse of Fenric. Set during WWII, with priests, soviet soldiers, weird vampires and Lovecraftian all-powerful ancient beings (and tentacled ones, too!) it’s quite the story. Somehow though, it all comes together in the end! Let’s take a look!

DW The Haunting of Villa Diodati

So, the Haunting of Villa Diodati does take place at the same time as a classic Big Finish story and makes it… unable to fit, while at the same time taking ideas from nearby stories as well. No doubt, not denying it. It’s also a really good story, so enjoyable that I don’t mind at all that history has been altered, as it tends to do a lot. So why is the story good? Well, it’s funny you should ask, because I was just about to write a review of it!

Die Another Day

Ah yes, Die Another Day. Pierce Brosnan’s swan song and a really good film… for about half of its runtime. Then it suddenly nosedives and becomes nearly unbearable. I think it’s still the most clear-cut “half good, half bad” film I’ve ever seen, making it like two different writers / directors took turns without consulting each other over tone. Well, does the good outweigh the bad? Let’s act like Sigmund Freud and “An-an-an-analyse this!”.

DW Can You Hear Me

It wasn’t my original plan to have these reviews go up the same day as the next episode, I swear! Anyway, Can You Hear Me? was a good episode, with the rarely-if-ever-used in the revived series idea of a God-like immortal villain walking around and hamming it up a bit, plus a look at mental health that while not as good as a certain past episode that tackled the subject, was still handled well. The World is Not Enough

The World is Not Enough might be the ultimate mixed bag as there are some bits I really genuinely like, but there are also some real poor parts as well. Every time I think I’m going to give this a 4, I remember something bad and it drops down again. Then I focus on the bad and think of dropping it to a 2, before I remember some of the good! Well, now I’ve spoiled the score in the opening paragraph, let’s take a deeper look anyway!
