Double Dragon II (NES) Review

Double Dragon II

Scrolling Sundays moves into week two, and with it the second (and I’m pretty sure last) game on the list that I didn’t actually play back in the day. I’ve already reviewed the original, and DD III is up next week (which I actually owned on the Mega Drive…) so given I have access to it via Nintendo Online, I thought I may as well complete the original Double Dragon trilogy rather than leave this out. It’s safe to say “The Revenge” is a big improvement over the original, but by how much? Let’s find out!

River City Ransom (NES) Review

River City Ransom

Time to finally kick of “Scrolling Sundays”! Oddly, the first two games in the weekly feature are ones I didn’t play back in the day, but since I have free access to them via Nintendo Online, I thought “why not?”. River City Ransom is a game I’ve been meaning to play for many years, so it was nice to finally sit down and play it a bunch. What’s this extremely early example of the genre like? Let’s find out!

WWF War Zone (PS1 / N64) Review

WWF Warzone

Guess who finally has more free time to return to the Wrestling Game Rundown? … Well, me, obviously, and while I wish the “more time” aspect would’ve come for a happier reason than the whole world shutting down, I shall take this opportunity regardless! So War Zone is the start of a four-game series using the same engine, one that I have sort-of fond memories of, but they always fell to the AKI engine N64 games in the long run each year. Still, this game was the first to have a proper Create-a-Wrestler, so there’s that! Let’s take a look then…

Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube) Review

Resident Evil 4

I remember looking forward to Resi 4, but after several recent releases failed to inspire (RE0 and the Outbreak series) I didn’t look into it much, and boy was I surprised! An entirely new control and view set up, a larger focus on action over horror, and a very weird new type of enemy that’s far more intelligent and capable than a zombie. Damn good fun it was too! Let’s take a look then, shall we?

Resident Evil Zero (Gamecube) Review

RE Zero

Hey, I know what you’re thinking “This is the second Resi film, why is he reviewing the prequel game?” Well, it’s simple: I’ve already reviewed Resident Evil 2 and its Remake, and if I review this now (given its close ties to the original REmake) and Code Veronica tomorrow, then Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 will match up with the fourth, fifth and sixth movies, which will be … fitting, I guess (though technically not accurate!) So with all that out of the way: Resident Evil Zero, the prequel that could have been a great idea, but instead is pretty poor and messes up the timeline a bit. Ah well, let’s take a look anyway!

Resident Evil: Remake (Gamecube) Review

RE Remake

Thanks to already having reviewed the original Resident Evil, I’ll be tackling the far superior remake up against the film of the same name, which is vastly different in every way despite being released in the same year! The Resident Evil Remake still remains one of the most legitimately tense and atmospheric games I’ve ever played, as well as one of the more challenging for newcomers… Let’s take a look!

Super Mario Maker 2 (Switch) Review

SMM2

During my turbulent summer this was the perfect game to get released for me, as it was easy to dip in and out of, be it handheld or full screen. It feels like a massive game, but in reality it’s a pretty simple level creator tool, but it lends itself to so many creative ideas that it will last a long, long time. So let’s take a look!

Double Dragon (NES) Review

Double Dragon NES

Double Dragon is one of the earliest examples of a scrolling beat ‘em up, one of my favourite genres as a kid, and one I still enjoy today. That being said, I didn’t actually play the original Double Dragon all that much, me and my brother rented it out once or twice, and I played it around my friends once, so this was an interesting revisit in that it felt fresher than most of the older games, with no nostalgia glasses to block any potential flaws… though given the film I reviewed alongside this, any flaws will seem pretty minimal…

Mega Man 7 (SNES) Review

Mega Man 7

It’s been a good while since I finished my reviews of the original NES run of Mega Man games, and while I dipped my toe in Castlevania in the meantime (and will continue to do so!) I’ve fired up Mega Man 7 and continued my journey through the original line of Mega Man games, a line that now includes an 11th entry! So let’s have a look at the only 16-bit original Mega Man entry then, shall we?

Super Mario Bros. (NES) Review

Super Mario Bros Game

There have been times on this blog where a marathon has led me to having to review something that makes me go “What new can I possibly say about that?” This is one of those times. The original Super Mario Bros. is iconic, addictive and its influence on the industry can’t be overstated. Even in 2019 the game is still fun to play, a joy to listen to, and has charming sprite-based graphics… In other words, the polar opposite of the film version (reviewed here!) Let’s take a deeper look anyway.
