Doctor Who: The Dark Path Review

It’s been about two years since I’ve been so caught up with Big Finish releases that I can actually post reviews of other Doctor Who stuff during quieter periods. The last one was in the middle of the Second Doctor part of this random TV and other media marathon and I actually went on to write the three other Second Doctor reviews before this site went on hiatus, so these next three random Who reviews are still in the old review format but Third Doctor onwards will match with current reviews. Without further ado:

So the non-TV part of the Second Doctor’s run in this chunk of older Who reviews starts off with a book review, a rare thing on this blog due to nothing other than me being a slow reader. Anyway, when I decided to finally go back and read some of the Doctor Who books I’d always wanted to read this was an obvious one because the idea of not just the Second Doctor meeting the Master but also a look at how The Doctor’s old friend became his enemy was too interesting a concept to pass up. Did it live up to that possibility? Let’s find out!

Red Dwarf – The Promised Land Review

We’ve reached the end of our look at Red Dwarf (well, for now, there have been at least three other points in the show’s run that looked like the end that turned out not to be the case!) as we take a look at “The Promised Land”, a 90-ish minute special. Remember when in the Series XI and XII reviews I mentioned episodes that felt like Doug Naylor had one good idea and that one idea didn’t stretch enough for 30 minutes? Well, imagine that, but the one idea not stretching to 90. While it does have one or two good moments of comedy, the vast majority is once again just “okay”. Let’s take a deeper look anyway!

One Piece – Fishman Island Arc (Episodes 539 – 553) Review

The Fisman Island Arc continues to chug along with an extended flashback in order to set up a lot of the characters and conflict that have already been of central focus so far and completely failed to gain my interest… In fairness, the flashback does hit heavy with the theme of illogical racism that is the core focus of the Fishmen, but once we get back to the present day I still can’t say I particularly care about any of them… Which makes me sound like a Fishman racist (whatever that means in real life) but I’m just talking about the lead villains and the stuff… Anyway, Let’s take a look!

Doctor Who – The Invisible Enemy Review

Another season of Doctor Who has arrived on Blu-Ray, so let’s take a look at the story I haven’t seen in the longest time, which is this case was difficult as while Season 15 has two of my favourite Tom Baker stories in “Horror of Fang Rock” and “Image of the Fendahl” it also has three of my least favourites in “Underworld”, “The Sun Makers” and this story, all three committing the cardinal sin of being dull rather than at least “so bad it’s fun to watch and make fun of”. In thinking about it, I’m pretty sure it’s “Invisible Enemy” that takes the prize of the longest since I last watched it, and given this has the debut of K9 there’s at least SOME interest to be found here… Let’s take a look, and who knows, maybe this time round I’ll suddenly really like it?!

Spider-Man – Origin (Amazing Fantasy #15, Amazing Spider-Man Issues 1-10) Review

Our next look at Marvel comics is, really, the big one as Spider-Man is undoubtably Marvel’s most popular hero. That being said his original run of comics, the first 10 of which are collected in a trade paperback I have (along with his debut issue in “Amazing Fantasy”) are all full of 60s charm and villain backstories we’ve seen 100 times since, often with these villains themselves in adaptations. Hell, Spider-Man’s debut story has been adapted so many times now that it’s going to feel redundant talking about it! Still, this is a look at major Marvel comic stories and I can’t miss out Spider-Man’s debut, so let’s start with that issue…

WWE WrestleMania XIX (GameCube) Review

This time next year will mark 10 years since this review site/blog began and the second ever review I did was the first “Wrestling Game Rundown” review… safe to say I haven’t gotten through these as quickly as I’d hoped back then! Still, I want to see if I can get through the remaining ones before we hit that milestone next year, and given its WrestleMania XL weekend right now why not get the next entry up, given it’s a WrestleMania game! XIX will forever be remembered for its frankly bizarre, almost scrolling beat ‘em-like “Revenge Mode” but what about the rest of the game? Let’s take a look!

Doctor Who – The Quin Dilemma Review

The Quin Dilemma, as well as being one letter away from an entirely different and rather ruder dilemma, is a celebration of forty years since the Sixth Doctor made his debut, which you could probably guess given the title is also a play on his first story, which was frankly awful but at least this was really good! It’s set out with a framing device episode, then a single part story, then a two part story, then another single part story before everything comes together for the sixth and final part, but it’s all so strongly connected that it didn’t make sense to break this into four or five reviews, so… let’s take a look!

One Piece – Fishman Island Arc (Episodes 523 – 538) Review

Okay so the plan was to split this arc in half but upon writing the first review (523 – 553) it was far, far too long. Despite not really liking this arc at all there were enough subplots, flashbacks and new characters that there’s just too much for one review if I want to keep it to a reasonable word count, so I’ve split THAT review in half and I’ll now review it in three. With that, here’s the original opening paragraph:

So we have finally reached it, the point where a lot of more casual One Piece fans often tap out of the show. Hell, I was really enjoying watching it back then but these episodes once a week? Nope, I ended up dropping it and it took a few years for me to get back into the show, and even then I just skipped to the final few episodes of this arc and then continued from there, so this is actually my first time watching a lot of these episodes, and boy do I understand why. At least I could get a few out of the way in one week, but that didn’t help much. Is it completely irredeemable? Well, no, but what’s good about the arc is mostly contained in the next half (um, two thirds…) of the story, these episodes are pretty poor all round… Let’s take a look anyway!

3 Body Problem – Season 1 Review

I was really hopeful when this series was announced as I was always interested in the three books the series is based on but they’re all massive, and given I only read for like 10-15 minutes before going to bed tackling a series like that would tie me up for most of the year. So while this series has changed a few things (including setting a lot of it in London rather than all of it in China and therefore the nationality of a lot of the characters) by the sounds of it this is a good adaptation. Well, at the very least, I can confirm it was really fun to watch with a great high-concept sci-fi story at its core. I had some issues with a lot of the central characters, but not enough to stop me from enjoying myself. Let’s take a look…

Doctor Who – Broken Memories – The Silent Priest / The Silent City Review

We cap off the Classic Doctors, New Monsters: Broken Memories boxset with this two-parter that oddly starts with the Eighth Doctor and then concludes with the Seventh, but then when they key monster’s power is to remove themselves from people’s memories whenever they look away it’s not hard to grasp how they’d use the idea! Sadly the story suffers from some extremely cartoony voices that rob a lot of scenes of any drama, but at least they use the “Silents” really well, even including some of the convoluted lore to boot. Let’s take a look!
