Red Dead Redemption II (PS4) Review

Red Dead Redemption 2

It’s the first game review since I combined my regular blog with the Game Review one, and it’s a hell of a first game to start with! Red Dead Redemption II continues Rockstar’s streak of great open world games, once again mixing good gameplay with an amazing story. So let’s take a deeper look into the sequel (that’s actually a prequel…)

Elseworlds Review

Elseworlds

The 2018 Arrowverse crossover was a different kind of beast than the previous two, being less focused on all-out action between teams of people, and more interested in doing three things: explore the psyche of Barry and Oliver, create a backdoor pilot for a Batwoman series, and set things up for 2019’s big crossover. It does all these things well, but it also makes for a less interesting crossover, especially as I’ve had my fill of “evil” versions of the established cast…Let’s take a look, anyway!

Doctor Who: Love and War Review

DW Love and War

Unlike the next story in the Audio / Comic Companion Debut marathon, this novel adaptation certainly makes sense in the audio category as Bernice Summerfield has made more audio appearances than she did during her initial novel run. Love and War is suitably dramatic and does a great job of introducing Benny, but the main thing was a rather nasty turn for Ace that sees her leave The Doctor is a huff… So let’s take a look!

Fusing the blogs, and other things…

Hogan Reviews Header Plane version

As you may have noticed I’ve changed things around a bit, created a new banner to reflect the domain name I now have, and along with it this blog is now ad free!

This did cause a problem, however, as my Game Review Blog now stood out as being very much full of ads, despite being linked heavily to this site. The most logical course of action  then, was to “fuse” the two blogs together here on this one, paid-for site… which I’ve done! As you’ll notice above in the menu tabs above, there is now a Games tab, linking to my previous game review helpfully imported from the other blog, and new ones will indeed be appearing here going forward. Don’t threat if you have no interest in the subject, as most of the time I got a new game review up once a fortnight, every other Saturday, but that is by no means a set-in-stone schedule either. That means there will still be far more of the content of the kind already prominently featured on this site every week.

Thanks for you continued support and here’s to nothing but good times in 2019! (which reminds me, I must get cracking on those Top 10 lists…)

Doctor Who: Four to Doomsday Review

DW Four to Doomsday

So I thought with the blu-ray season sets being released now I’d watch and review at least one story from each season as they come out, rather than do the whole season in one go and ruin potential marathons for down the line. For Season 19 I chose Four to Doomsday, as I had already covered Castrovalva for the “Debut Story Marathon”, and it was the one I hadn’t seen in the longest… that wasn’t called Time-Flight… Let’s take a look then, at the story that is actually Davison’s debut in the role, recording-wise.

The Heroic Legend of Arslan – Season 1 Episodes 1 – 13 Review

Heroic Legend of Arslan S1 P1

With nothing to review for Anime UK News in the pipeline and more and more TV shows vanishing for the Christmas period, I thought it would be a good time to raid that classic part of any anime collection: the boxsets brought on sale but you never got round to watching. Yes, at some point early in the year the two collectors boxes of Heroic Legend of Arslan went on sale for an incredibly small amount so I picked them up, and after the first half of the opening series I can say I’m glad I did! While it’s not ground breaking or stunning, it is a fun series firmly entrenched in medieval / historical battles genre, with a bit of fantasy thrown in (I refuse to use the “it’s like Game of Thrones!” tagline as that’s pretty much where the similarities end…) Let’s have a look!

Soylent Green Review

Soylent Green

We reach the 1970s in the Sci-Fi films “10 Decades” marathon, and with it we reach another film where I’ve seen / heard it mentioned or parodied so much I wanted to finally watch it. Soylent Green is a dystopian story set in 2022 New York, where over-population has caused a greater divide between the rich and poor, and global warming has made the weather constantly muggy and unpleasant… Probably closer to how a lot of the world will be like in four years’ time than we’d all like, really… Anyway, enough current day political bollocks, let’s have a look at the film in question!

Doctor Who: The Hunting Ground Review

DW The Hunting Ground

The Sixth incarnation of The Doctor is once again travelling alone in The Hunting Ground, our last main range audio drama story of 2018, and boy… it’s not very interesting. It gives off a vibe of the writer having a core concept but not knowing how to either spread it across two hours, nor how to write cliffhangers. Still, it’s not all bad! Let’s take a look in more detail…

Arrow – Season 7 Episodes 1 – 8 Review

Arrow S7 P1

Arrow’s seventh season starts off in familiar fashion to previous Arrowverse storylines, though unlike when Flash put their lead behind bars at the start of the year, this time it actually felt like it matters (and it was for more than two episodes…) It created a more unique atmosphere, when combined with an interesting flashforward rather than the usual flashback, it makes this season at least get off to a more interesting start than a lot of previous efforts…

Supergirl – Season 4 Episodes 1 – 8 Review

Supergirl S4 P1

Supergirl Season 4 kicks off with a rather on-the-nose look at racism and nationalism in our current society by transplanting aliens as the new foreign menace that are stealing people’s jobs and can’t be trusted etc. It’s all rather dull, and in my case (and hopefully yours too!), it’s preaching to the choir and taking a lot of the reality-escaping fun away from the show… So, yeah. Let’s take a closer look!
