WWF WrestleMania 2000

Yay! Another AKI game, and one with the WWF (at the time) license no less! I remember absolutely going crazy at the announcement that THQ and AKI had dropped the WCW license and were now working for their competition, and I still have a very vivid memory (which makes sense as I was 15 at the time, so it’s not like I was a child or anything) of seeing Chris Jericho was in this game, even though he’d only jumped ship recently, and just freaking out. So was the marriage of the AKI engine and WWF during the “just starting to get away from the super-immature attitude era and heading to the well written attitude era” a winner? … Do you even have to ask?!

Street Fighter Assassin's Fist

Well, that was a quick break! Yes, we’re back to a fighting game adaptation, and on our third attempt at Street Fighter no less, but for the first time the (admittedly small) crew actually decided to hand wave the idea of trying to appeal to a mass market and just make a straight adaptation for fans like themselves. Originally a mini-series uploaded to YouTube (with the first preview being called “Alpha”, which is why I reviewed Alpha 3 along with this…? It’s not, but whatever), Assassin’s Fist was eventually compiled into a film. All that being said, is such a small fan production any good? Does doing such justice to the source material produce a better film? Let’s find out!

Street Fighter Alpha 3

We’ve reached something of a milestone here, as this is the last fighting game I’ll be reviewing as part of this marathon, and the final of three Street Fighter games to boot. After reviewing the original with the first film, and Super SFII with the second film, I thought I’d review my favourite Street Fighter game alongside “Assassin’s Fist”, so I went with Alpha 3, the final of the prequels to SFII and a PS1 game I became very addicted too for a while. A sense a pattern emerging, as the first Troughton era Lost Story was pretty awful, the second was good, and now… Yeah. This isn’t good. While it’s not as bad as Prison in Space, and certainly not as painfully insulting to the senses, Queen of Time instead commits the cardinal sin of being boring. Really, really boring. It was originally written by Brian Hayles, the same man who originally wrote the similarly boring Dark Planet Lost Story… so let’s take a look!

Streets of Rage II

So, here we go. If I were to make a “Top X favourite games of all time” list, this would easily be in the top 5, if not near the very top (I have no idea what would be at the top, that would require a lot of thought…) The gameplay, the graphics, the music, the look… everything about this game was amazing to me back when it came out, and it’s still every bit as good in 2020. Dragon Ball Red Ribbon Army Arc P4

Although there is plenty of humour to be had in the next arc (that’s sort of the final part of this overall story…) this part of the Red Ribbon Army arc always feels like the beginning of the turning point towards more action-heavy story telling. Tao Pai Pai is a deadly and serious (until the end) foe, and for the first time Goku decides to use the Dragon Balls to return someone from death. Interested? Let’s have a look then, as the Red Ribbon Army arc draws to a close, but we’re not quite done yet…

The Boys Season 1

Despite what I said in my review of Witcher’s first season being the last old review catch up, here is a late review of the first season of The Boys, though in this case it’s not an old review I’ve been sitting on, instead it’s a show I only just got round to watching. I just didn’t feel like it right away, and the worst thing to do with a series is watch it when you’re not in the mood. It’s a good thing too, as this series was a really fun watch, with some top-class dark humour and great characters. Let’s have a closer look!

Prince of Persia The Sands of Time

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve just watched four average-to-awful fighting game-based movies in a row or what, but I enjoyed Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. I mean, the script might not win any originality awards, but it was still an entertaining two hours of adventure that actually uses some imagery and ideas from the game it was based on (that I’ve seen a lot about, but never actually played, hence why I reviewed the original game alongside this instead…) Is it good enough to actually recommend though?
